On Sunday, June 4, some 15 million voters in the State of Mexico and Coahuila will be able to exercise their suffrage to elect the governor in their respective states, sThere are important elections prior to the federal ones in 2024.
Therefore, in said entities the Prohibition Law will be applied in said entities, that is, intoxicating beverages may not be sold or consumed during election day on Sunday.
Here we tell you when the dry law begins in these states and in which parts it will be applied.
Dry law in Edomex
In accordance with the electoral law of the State of Mexico, the sale of intoxicating beverages is prohibited, in the economic units whose main activity is that “the day of the election and the preceding one”; that is to say, there will be a dry law in the most populated entity in the country on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June.
However, some of the most populated municipalities in Edomex, such as Naucalpan, Tlalnepantla, Atizapán, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Huixquilucan, Nicolas Romero, Tepotzotlán and Cuautitlán, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited as of Friday, June 2.
However, restaurants whose main activity is the sale of prepared foods are exempted from said prohibition, and where appropriate, the sale of alcoholic beverages as a complementary activity, according to state law.
Likewise, article 321 of the Mexican electoral law establishes that people who are “intoxicated, under the influence of narcotics, muffled, armed, or ostensibly affected of their mental faculties” will not have access to the polls.
Dry law in Coahuila
For its part, in the 38 municipalities of Coahuila the dry law will be applied from 00:00 hours on June 3. In this case, the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in all establishments without exception.
According to the Coahuila Government Secretariat, those establishments, bars or outlets that are reported for not respecting the dry law may be subject to a fine from 46,000 to 70,000 pesos, in addition to the closure of the premises.
What will be voted on besides the governorships?
In addition to the two governorships, 25 deputies will be renewed in Coahuila, 16 of relative majority and nine of proportional representation.
According to the INE, 171,360 citizens will be responsible for receiving and counting the votes; 820 people will carry out electoral supervision tasks; 153 foreign visitors have been accredited; and more than 10,000 applications have been approved to carry out electoral observation.
Regarding the last two groups of people, the INE said that they “contribute to the certainty and transparency” of election day.
On Sunday night, the local INE agencies will inform citizens about voting trends, through a quick count of 450 random polling stations in Coahuila and 700 in the State of Mexico.
Before the start this Thursday of the period of reflection, the agency called on political actors to comply with the lawwhich prevents them from carrying out public acts of campaigning, propaganda or electoral proselytism.
