Killers of the Flower Moon marks the return of Martin Scorsese to directing after four long years of waiting. And although the tape has not yet hit theaters (it will at the end of this year), its acclaimed director already has another project on the horizon. Said film will serve for Martin Scorsese to show the most spiritual side of him, and will have Jesus as the absolute protagonist. Where did the idea come from?
It all began with his time at the Cannes Film Festival, where he presented the aforementioned Killers of the Flower Moon, which received a great deal of praise. Subsequently, he toured Italy, which led him to meet with Pope Francis. Although Scorsese is known to be religiously inclined, no one expected his next project to explore his beliefs. Much less that he was based on such a character.
This commented the director at a press conference from the Vatican, called “The global aesthetics of the Catholic imagination” (via Variety):
“I have responded to the Pope’s call to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a film about Jesus. And I’m about to start doing it.”
After those words, many began to speculate that Scorsese’s next project would be said story with Jesus. And although the filmmaker’s representative was asked about the filmmaker’s statements, he did not comment on it.
Scorsese, his wife, and Pope Francis met during a private audience at the Vatican. Thanks to an Italian medium, it is known that, during the conversation, both shared points of view related to their personal experiences and the influences that have marked the director’s successful career.
Scorsese noted that he had great admiration for The gospel according to Saint MatthewItalian film released in 1964. He also spoke about the meaning of his own 1988 film The last temptation of Christ. And although it took many years to return to the subject in one of his productions, the Oscar winner captured ideas about his “research on the figure of Jesus” in Silencea drama he directed in 2016. The film was even screened in the Vatican.
So far there are no more details about the Martin Scorsese film about Jesus. But knowing the director’s style, we can expect a story that addresses important issues and a story full of far-reaching questions around his influence on the Catholic religion. What do you think? How could a story with such characteristics turn out?
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
