the hollywood star Matt Damon has finally opened up about why he appeared in Crypto.com’s infamous “Fortune favors the brave” ad about the cryptocurrency exchange, which was once the subject of incessant mockery.
Speaking to the Associated Press on March 27 at the premiere of his new movie, Damon was somewhat embarrassed when explaining the reason for his appearance in the ad. He said it was mainly because his clean water initiative, Water.org, was in bad financial shape:
“We had a bad year at Water.org, and I made that announcement in an attempt to raise money for Water.org.”
Damon founded the Clean Water Project in 2009 with engineer and philanthropist Gary White. Its goal is to increase access to clean water around the world by providing small loans to finance the purchase and installation of faucets and toilets.
Damon explained that he once donated his entire salary to Water.org because he was in dire financial straits.
The Hollywood icon went on to say that “Crypto.com found out about it and donated a million dollars to Water.org on their own,” before adding:
“I am definitely very grateful to them, and for what they did for our foundation.”
Posted in October 2021, the ad featured Damon amidst a digital landscape of historical figures such as the Wright brothers and Sir Edmund Hillary. He was featured on billboards and television commercials around the world.
Following a horrible year for crypto in 2022, the announcement received widespread criticism, and Damon has been the butt of numerous jokes ever since, like those of the television show South Park and late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert.
