Esports titles are no joke. They are games that have an incredibly high skill ceiling and even with arduous practice, one might never get good at it. League of Legends is one of those games. That said, LOL is just so competitively fun that even if we’re bad at it, we’ll still play it.
Usually, the hardest part about the game is the beginning. Take choosing a champion for instance, that alone will already give you a massive headache. Picking the wrong character that is not suited for your skill level is a spell for disaster.
Not to worry though, as we will be helping you out today with that. Today, we will go into 8 of the most beginner-friendly champions you can choose when you are first starting out in League of Legends.

1. Master Yi
Master Yi is great for players who do not like to press a lot of buttons. This is because a large part of Master Yi’s game plan is right-clicking on a unit until it bites the dust. Essentially, you don’t need to rely heavily on mechanical skills to make Master Yi work.
Commonly played as a Jungler, Master Yi is favoured by many starters due to his low execution level. Don’t be fooled by this. This does not mean that the champion is weak but there is just lesser room for error. He is a safe pick and if you want to begin working on your Jungler proficiency, Master Yi is your candidate.
2. Janna
When they start out, many new players will begin their League of Legends journey from the Support role. A popular candidate to do this is none other than Janna herself. She has a perfect set of skills that fulfil many supportive requirements, both in lane and team fights.
Her skills are straightforward and easy to understand even for those that are not familiar with MOBAs. They have supportive staples like Disable, Heal and Buff. The only mechanic that is truly required for Janna is positioning like most Support champions. Beginner players can use Janna to practice this without having to worry about farming as she is rather not item-reliant.
3. Ashe
A classic from the League of Legends roster and even today, she is a mighty reliable Marksman. Like with most champions on this list, her execution is very low and trying to understand Ashe is really easy. As long as you know her timing and can farm well, you basically already have the bread and butter to play Ashe well.
In the late game, Ashe’s damage can go to some absurd level. Her passive allows her to hit like a truck with minimal effort. If you are playing at lower levels, many players will not know how to efficiently avoid her volleys and if they are caught under it, that usually means death.
Honestly, with her toolkit and all, Ashe is not just a good pick for beginners but is also very viable in higher ranks. It’s a good champion to invest your time in.
4. Annie
Design-wise, Annie is one of the more unique ones on the roster. She and her cute teddy bear are both adorable and menacing at the same time. But that’s not all that is good about Annie as another of Annie’s perks is that she is pretty easy to play.
Annie is a champion that players can alternate from being a Mid Laner or a Support—depending on their playstyle or the items you build. She’s versatile and this can throw the enemy off guard quite easily. As for her gameplay, her skills are very punishing, especially if you are using them against other new players that don’t know how her champion works.
She is a stack-based hero and after gaining four stacks from using her skills, her next hit will be a guaranteed stun. This is extremely annoying to deal with and can be used to dominate the laning stage. It is a good bullying tool and most newcomers cannot and don’t know how to deal with it.
5. Darius
If your team ever needs a body to soak up damage or survive the hard lane, Darius is your guy. Also, he is a simple champion to utilise as he just gives so much leeway for newer players when it comes to positioning and awareness.
Why do we say this is because Darius is so tanky and to take him down, you’ll need a lot of effort. And if you don’t efficiently kill him quickly, he’ll turn the tides with little effort. This is a little bit ‘cheesy’ but it is something that will win you games at the lower levels. Plus, his close-gap ability is also really good for chasing and starting battles with minimal execution.
All in all, Darius is a character that basically just goes in and is at the forefront of things. It requires more courage than skill to play this champion and if you have decided to pick up League of Legends in the first place, we’re confident that you already have the former.
6. Malphite
Another tank-based hero designed to absorb damage while also dishing out a respectable amount. Some might consider Malphite to be a rather cheap champion but we really don’t see it that way. He is just really simple to get going and it’s just one of those that beginners hate to fight against but love playing.
What makes Malphite so strong and deadly in the lower ranks is largely his Granite Shield ability. It beefs him up a lot—given that you have a high HP number—and ganking him is almost impossible. This makes him an ideal candidate for the top lane where he can create a lot of space for his fellow Marksman to farm and grow.
So, if you want a champion that can be easily disruptive in team fights or in the lane, Malphite is your go-to choice. You can almost go no wrong with him.
7. Miss Fortune
Miss Fortune is a gorgeous-looking pirate and fortunately, she is also one of the easier and more manageable Marksman to play.
Her flowchart is pretty simple, first is to survive the lane and get as many items as possible. Once you’ve hit your timing, you’ll see that Miss Fortune will be taking down her enemies like flies. Her abilities scale really well into the late game and combined with the right items, she can quite easily solo carry a game on her own.
Additionally, for a Marksman, Miss Fortune has really good utility tools as well. Her Strut and Make it Rain skills are all great ways to gain mobility while the latter limiting her opponents’. This means she can come online quickly, given that she has a good laning stage, giving your team a massive snowballing opportunity.
8. Trundle
Speaking of snowball champions, Trundle is certainly up there. If your team is winning, Trundle is there to ensure that your team is not just owning but is crushing your opponents. He thrives on enemies’ death and once that starts rolling in, Trundle is a force to be reckoned with.
Many of his skills revolve around Slows and Heals. Both of these are reliable tools during team fights and they are all very easy to use. One thing about beginner matches in League of Legends is that they love engaging in combat even when their champions aren’t farmed enough. This is where Trundle comes into the picture and will make them pay for it.
He’s insane in team fights and arguably benefits the most from them if his team comes up on top.
Closing Thoughts
It looks like we’ve finally made it to the end of the list! Good job if you’ve made it this far! We just want to also stress that League of Legends requires a pretty mechanically-demanding skill. You cannot just pick any of these champions on the list and assume you are going to win. Practice and experience are your two biggest teachers and over time, you’ll get better. For now, you can start with these as they will give you a better time climbing and learning the ropes.
