The night of each September 15 is always a reason for celebration for the commemoration of the Independence of Mexico. Although in the midst of the euphoria accidents that turn parties into tragedies are also common. With this in mind, during this festivity the pyrotechnic burn cases forcing them to visit hospitals the next day.
Accidents that can be avoided
Specialists of the Mexican Foundation for Dermatology (FMD) warn of the increase in this national holiday season of the serious consequences -even incapacitating- as a result of the improper use of “rockets” and other gunpowder articles.
According to Dr. Janina Llergo, current president of the FMD, what is most observed in hospitals these days are patients with first and second degree burns from direct fire, in addition to amputation by explosion.
“Accidents related to rockets and gunpowder (when used specifically in the production of fireworks) occupy 17% of the incidence of direct fire burns and 11% of burns in general. Unfortunately, children are the most affected, particularly between the ages of 10 and 14, since 60% of cases occur during this stage.
Tips for immediate burn care
He stressed that applying Proper skin care prevents further damage. Within the general advice, he indicated that in the event of a direct fire burn, the affected person should be kept away from the object that caused the burn.
The next step is to remove the clothing (if it is stuck to the skin or if the burn is very extensive) and wash the burned area with water at room temperature. He emphasized that cold water should be avoided because in this way harmful substances can be eliminated and both pain and inflammation can be reduced.
Regarding first-degree burns, in which only redness and burning are observed, he pointed out that it is necessary to apply moisturizing cream immediately, after washing with water and go immediately to a dermatologist, in addition to avoiding self-medication.
On the other hand, in the case of second and third degree burns, the president of the FMD stressed that they must be evaluated immediately in an emergency service because they require multidisciplinary management depending on the extension.
“Furthermore, if the burn is extensive, it is suggested to cover the area with clean and damp cloths during the transfer to the hospital.”
Finally, the recommendation of the specialists is that in the event of any fire accident, a dermatologist should be consulted. Based on their knowledge, the specialist will define the most appropriate treatment for each case. In addition, the use of home remedies that can complicate the timely care of injuries should also be avoided.
