Carlos Sainz’s 2022 season is not being easy at all, but little by little the Spanish rider seems to be recovering his best version. However, breakdowns and retirements have put him in a difficult position and Ferrari must make a decision.
Slowly, Carlos Sainz He is finding his best version as a driver in a 2022 Formula 1 season in which things are not going well. The Spanish rider adds, after 11 races of the 22 that make up this year’s calendar, one victory, one pole position and six podiums.
But also some mistakes and various breakdowns that keep him far from the leadership of the World Cup, no less than 75 points behind Max Verstappen and 37 behind his teammate, Charles Leclerc.
“I understand the people who say it, because it has not been my easiest start to the season”
Four withdrawals that do a lot of damage, but that do not prevent Carlos Sainz from remaining optimistic and hoping for a much more solid second half of the season. “I think we’ve been doing a better job these past few weekends.. I think since Monaco… Monaco was already a turning point, fighting for pole position. Also in Baku we fought for pole. In Canada, we fight for victory.”
“I’ve been picking up a little momentum. I wouldn’t say I’m 100% yet. I think there are still things to improve, as we saw in the Silverstone race. I definitely feel much closer and like (victory) could happen again soon.”reiterates a Carlos Sainz who in previous seasons has always been very competitive in the second half of the season.

Squire of Charles Leclerc
Carlos Sainz is clear that will do what Ferrari asksbut he also considers that it is still early to draw conclusions about his season, as the events of the first months of competition have shown.
“We’ll see at the end of the year. I think it’s still early. It was early when I finished P2 in Bahrain and everyone said it was going to be an easy ride for Ferrari. I said it when I was at my lowest point in Barcelona after the spin in the race, and I say it now: it is too early to draw conclusions”, says Sainz.
A good part of the Ferrari fans ask their team to make the decision to put Carlos Sainz at the service of Charles Leclerc to try to take advantage of the few chances that the Monegasque still has of winning the World Cup. And Carlos Sainz has his own point of view on it.
“I understand the people who say it, because it has not been my easiest start to the season,” he begins by admitting. “But, if you look closely at my last four or five seasons in F1, I’ve always peaked in the second half and I’ve always had a very strong second half, so let’s wait and see.”.
A new more powerful engine
The spectacular engine failure that Carlos Sainz suffered in Austria has placed the Spanish driver on the verge of an inevitable sanction for exceeding the limit of engine components set by the regulations.
Very probably, this will make the rider from Madrid debut his fourth engine in France. And most likely, this unit will incorporate some modifications to improve the reliability of the combustion engine, as well as a new MGU-K that will provide a little more electrical power.
Ferrari hopes to maximize the margin of development of the electrical part of the engine, since unlike the rest of the engine parts, whose development has already been frozen, can evolve until September 1. With this in mind, Carlos Sainz will most likely serve as a testing laboratory to reach that date with the best possible engine for the next three years.
