The Brazilian Senate wants McDonald’s and Burger King to give more details about a couple of products that were promoted with misleading advertising in that country.
The Commission for Transparency, Supervision and Defense of the Consumer of the Brazilian Senate decided to summon the representatives of both fast food restaurant companies to dispute the allegations against you.
McDonald’s in Brazil was called to testify last week by consumer protection organizations for do not use “picanha” meat in the new line of sandwiches called “McPicanha”.
Same thing with the burger. Whopper Rib fast food chain Burger King.
Picanha is a premium cut of Brazilian beef, loved by many throughout the country.
The problem? The hamburger had no picanha.
In fact, the fast-food giant only used a “picanha-flavored” sauce.
McDonalds ordered to withdraw a product from sale for false advertising
The consumer defense organization Procon ordered the company to stop selling McPicanha in stores in Brasilia and explain the case of false advertising.
McDonald’s has apologized for causing “doubt” among customers and has withdrawn the sandwich from all of its Brazilian restaurants.
Advertising regulator Conar has also opened an investigation into the case.
While it was on sale, the McPicanha cost 42 reais (about $8.50), a high price in a country where consumers have lost purchasing power due to lower wages and inflation.
The case sparked further outrage as beef prices rose sharply in Brazil, leading to a historic low in protein consumption among residents.
“We cannot accept this, it has to be clarified and those who generated the error must be held accountable,” said Senator Nelsinho Trad, author of the request.
In addition to the companies, the commission will invite a representative of the National Council for Advertising Self-regulation (Conar), a representative of the website Eat like your eyeswho spread the case on social networks, and a member of the National Health Council.
