In a Twitter thread published this Friday, April 15, in the middle of Holy Week, the president of Mexico, AMLO, referred to what he described as “exciting and beautiful the life and work of Jesus.”
He said he admires him for, above all, “his sincere love for the poor and his consistent action on non-violence.”
Andrés Manuel López Obrador surprised Internet users because he started the thread arguing with quotes from leaders who were openly atheist: like Carlos Marx and Federico Engels.
In some way, he tried to explain that he agrees with the thinking of “these two great scientists”, but from a religious point of view that neither of them had.
“On Tuesday, in my quarterly report, I quoted Frederick Engels in his speech at the tomb of Karl Marx: “Just as Darwin discovered the law of development of organic nature, Marx discovered the law of development of human history: the fact , so simple but hidden under the ideological undergrowth that man needs, first of all, to eat, drink, have a roof over his head and dress before being able to do politics, science, art or religion…”, AMLO said in the first posts.
But he added: “I agree with the genius of these two great scientists, but the life and work of Jesus is also exciting and beautiful, especially for his sincere love for the poor and his consistent action on non-violence.”
Marx understood that religion is “the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a disheartened world, as is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people”.
For Engels, meanwhile, religion was “a reflection in the head of man.”

Later, AMLO added in his tweets a reference to the Indian Mahatma Gandhi, the main architect of the independence of his country, speaking of Jesus. “It is no accident that Gandhi said: ‘I know of no one who has done more for humanity than Jesus,’” he wrote.
After talking about Marx, Engels and Gandhi, AMLO finally published a video of La Saeta, by the Spanish poet Antonio Machado, performed by Joan Manuel Serrat.
