We like special projects that recover the past and transform it to adapt it to the present. This is the case of this old barn built in 1850 and located in Nieuwe Wetering, in the Netherlands, which has been rehabilitated by Design & Meer.
The barn, which was originally going to be demolished, represents a fantastic example of a perfect symbiosis between traditional materials and innovative materials.
The owners, a young couple passionate about design, opted to transform the space of the old barn into a modern kitchen that
preserve the charm of the original structure. Given the space and volume available, the kitchen has been thoughtfully designed to be spacious with plenty of storage options.
On the latter, special attention has been paid to the design and placement of the upper cabinets to prevent them from blocking the natural lighting of the room, limited by the small number of windows.
To visually accentuate the length of the kitchen, the long and uninterrupted lines present in the space have been used. To increase luminosity, in addition to choosing the color white (which also enhances the wall tiles), the large window on the south wall of the house has been given a matte finish that prevents it from reflecting light and, on the contrary, spread throughout the room.
In the kitchen there are also some black touches that break the monotony and intensify the sense of perspective, thus expanding the perception of spaciousness in the space. To create clean lines in the kitchen and furniture, which would integrate the central beams without compromising the continuous design of the room, a material without visible joints and with perfect finishes was needed for the countertops and the sides of the island.
In this way, from the Design & Meer studio they opted to choose HIMACS to get a ssmooth and even surface on the worktopsince in addition to the design part, it is easy to clean because any stain would only be superficial and would not penetrate inside.
The sink It has also been made by HIMACS, and it integrates without visible joints in the worktop, which creates a perfect and integrated finish, and guarantees good hygiene thanks to its easy maintenance.
The kitchen island is extended by a bar, which had to be robust enough for the chosen design, but also the same thickness as the rest of the worktop. Undoubtedly, one of the most striking parts of the project is the tiled wall of more than four meters.
Produced by Studio Doorbakkenwhose job it is to take everyday objects and transform them into something unique and personal, the tile mural design is a 3D model made from a photograph taken by the homeowner of a drop of water falling onto a liquid surface.
