Perform the Profeco study and compare the ingredients with the labeling.
They find misleading advertising and compounds harmful to health.
After a laboratory study carried out on various brands, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco) detected that some of the harmful instant soups for health, so they will soon announce which companies will leave the Mexican market.
In an interview with Milenio, Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, head of Profeco, announced that the results of the in-depth analysis, with the nutritional or harmful contents of each product, will be announced in the Consumer Magazine October.
However, the official clarified that many of the brands that will be sanctioned work under a misleading advertising scheme, so advice will be given to the consumer to detect harmful foods before buying, reviewing the labels and some percentages in the ingredients.
“One of the analyzes we carry out has to do with these instant soups that have become very popular in the country, who use them a lot to kill hunger, but you have to be careful … they are not going to kill more than hunger,” he warned Sheffield.
When checking that the packaging of each product was consistent with its content, the agency also highlighted the brands that did comply with the real nutritional value.
“At least two products are going to be withdrawn from the market, by the way, both imported,” said the representative of the federal agency.
Flavor vs. quality
The Consumer Magazine has already dissected the content of instant soups and even reported before the chemical analysis the type of consumption they have in Mexico, where they have replaced foods such as beans and rice in the last decade. due to its low cost and ease of preparation.
Among the most prominent ingredients are carbohydrates from cereals or plants, some amounts of fat, protein and energy ranging from 29 to 230 kilocalories per 100 grams of these processed products.
Some of the most studied ingredients that are present in a high net content index in brands is monosodium glutamate (MSG), that is, the “seasoning” that seeks to enhance the flavors in the taste buds; however, taste and health are not always allies.
This is one of the ingredients that when ingested daily are associated with symptoms such as headache, suffocation, a feeling of pressure in the face, numbness in the mouth, chest pain and breathing difficulties, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Joint FAO / WHO Food Expert Committee.
For nutritional health experts, who for years have recommended eliminating instant soups from the daily diet, these products are an imaginary kind of “hunger suppressing food”, but with a caloric intake of 270 to 334 kilocalories per 60-gram serving. , similar to eating two to three chili bean tacos or a cheese sandwich, with one difference… the fats, carbohydrates and proteins between the two meals are different.
In addition, various studies expose, in this type of processed food the salt is higher, which represents a greater risk for regular consumers.
