MADRID, 24 (EUROPA PRESS)
The Congress of the Mexican state of Sonora has approved equal marriage this Thursday, making it the 24th residential entity in the country to allow the union between people of the same sex.
Specifically, a green light has been given, with 27 votes in favor and seven against, to an initiative that reforms and repeals some provisions of the State Family Code, reports the Mexican media ‘Milenio’.
Until now, in this northern state, same-sex couples could only marry through an amparo process, but with the authorized modification the marriage is established as a legitimate union between two people without the need to specify the sex.
The deputies of the ruling party of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Celeste Taddei, and of the Citizen Movement, Rosa Elena Trujillo, have presented the proposal, demanded by the state’s LGBT community, while the votes against have been cast by the Action Party National (PAN).
“The rights of all people, without distinction, must be guaranteed before the law, it is something that has to do with human dignity and the right to free development of people. That is why talking about equal marriage is talking about Human Rights” , has defended Trujillo.
For his part, the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, has applauded the approval of equal marriage in the residence entity. “In my Government, Human Rights will be a constant in decision-making,” he guaranteed in a message posted on his Twitter profile.
“This is an important step in approving and ratifying what has already been stipulated by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation,” Durazo added.
In total, 24 of the 32 residential entities in Mexico have given the green light to equal marriage, the last of them, before Sonora, Querétaro, which authorized it last Wednesday.
