The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way many people live, starting with communication that became completely digital. These changes reached all generations, especially generation Z, which, according to a study, currently values connection more, so they prefer visual communication more.
According to a report from the Center for Generational Kinetics, 95 percent of Gen Z owns a smartphone, where more than half of these young people use it five or more hours a day.
Likewise, the same study mentions that one in four reaches 10 hours, and almost 90 percent of adolescents between 14 and 16 years old have a smartphone, 75.7 percent have a laptop, 68.8 percent a tablet and 52.6 percent a desktop computer.
According to the same report, this generation uses the Internet to search for music, look at pages for fun, they maintain contact with people they cannot see frequently or search for information or documentation.
Generation Z Communication Trends
A study by Snapchat was given the task of identifying the main trends in generation Z and the conversations of young people between 13 and 24 years old in Mexico.
It is no secret to anyone that Generation Z are true digital natives, as they were born and raised with technology.
“Generation Z is very self-aware… they really grew up online, with the explosion of digital spaces. They openly talk about how that impacted both them and their relationship with older generations”, explains Ioana Literat, Columbia University academic and Alpha and Z generation technology expert.
The study Generation Z in 2022: Culture, commerce and conversations in Mexico, from the digital platform, indicated that this generation places a lot of importance on showing their authentic personality, which is why 54 percent of those surveyed feel that “being true to who I am” has become more important, despite experiencing the pressure of expectations.

“Generation Z is shaping the culture online…and the visual aspect of communication is key. Bitmojis, emojis, GIFs! There is a big change in the adoption of visual communication”, adds Literat.
Likewise, the Snap report revealed that 98 percent of the young people surveyed have used some tool of visual communication while texting with your friends to create a much more personal connection.
“This trend emphasizes the importance of creative, expressive and visual communication, as it enables quality interactions that lead to deeper relationships. In fact, 3 out of 4 Gen Z youth agree that connecting with my close friends is the simplest way to feel happier.
In that same order, these young people point out that avatars are very important for their communication, since 2 out of 3 Snap respondents say they help them express themselves better.
“Bitmojis are our most authentic representations in the digital world and in augmented reality, and they are here to stay. It is literally your personalized emoji: you can create your own with all your physical features, clothing style, hairstyle, accessories and take it with you on any adventure (digital or real!) that you live from Snapchat”, they highlight.
“Generation Z is valuing these moments and relationships more than ever. Nearly 8 in 10 respondents plan to spend more time connected in person than before the pandemic. Generation Z values connection. Relationships are important, family is important, spirituality is important. They are thinking about how they can create a meaningful life,” says social researcher and futurist Mark McCrindle.
