One of the most affectionate, familiar and imposing dog breeds is the great dane, also known as German Bulldog or German Alan. One of the biggest dogs in the world that behind its robust appearance is one of the most affectionate and cuddly. His build is strong and muscular, and despite his imposing appearance and huge mouth, he is a piece of bread. We just have to see the character Scooby Doo, a lovable Great Dane.
Its origin dates back to the 19th century as a boar hunter, but today it is considered by experts to be ‘the world’s largest lapdog’ that adapts perfectly to living inside a house, since its character is very calm and affable.
We have selected some curiosities of this breed that are worth knowing if you plan to make it part of your family or if it already is:
- The Great Dane’s coat is short, hard and shiny, rough in texture to the touch, and they come in different coat colors such as brindle or fawn, blue, black or harlequin (with black spots on a white background).
- It is a breed with a low life expectancy, since it ranges between 6 and 8 years, approximately.
- Although it is an imposing dog, it is very affectionate, cuddly and does not usually bark much. He also gets along great with children, as he tends to play with them. They are very sensitive canines that create a very close bond with the owner and other members of the family.
We have also spoken with Ángel González, a veterinarian based in Zamora, who has given us more details about this very tender breed with an elegant appearance:
- Dane males can reach 81 centimeters and weigh between 45 and 80 kilos, while females measure about 76 centimeters and weigh between 45 and 60 kilos.
- They value company and do not take loneliness well.
- It is a very intelligent breed and has a lot of patience.
- Respect smaller dog breeds.
- It is a very obedient canine which is why it is very easy to train.
In addition to all these curiosities, the feeding of this large dog is abundant. As explained in AnimalWised, caloric needs are high, since they need around 2,480 kilocal/day in males and 1,940 kilocal/day in females. Homemade food and feed that is always labeled “nutritionally complete” are suitable. In a puppy it is recommended to eat several times a day, if he is more adult with two a day is enough.
