21 Mexican women lost their lives every day, last year, as a result of breast cancer, according to a study entitled “Statistics of Registered Deaths”, carried out by the Inegi in 2021. Specifically, 7,925 deaths were reported for this type of neoplasia, so that breast cancer continues to be the first cause of death of women in productive stages in the country.
In addition, in 2022, as of October, 15,409 cases of breast cancer had already been diagnosed, thus exceeding the records for all of 2021, the year in which 11,660 were reported, according to data provided by the National System of Epidemiological surveillance.
Mexico City, Jalisco and Veracruz were the three entities that concentrated the most cases of breast cancer
The three entities that concentrated the highest number during the last nine months were: Mexico City (2,584); Jalisco (2,021 cases) and Veracruz (with 1,453). Added to these data, according to specialists, 3 out of 10 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer suffered from obesity or overweight, which makes both conditions (along with other metabolic disorders) triggers of malignant and fatal tumors, due to because more than 60 percent are treated in advanced stages.
This situation worsens because the Ensanut 2021 on COVID-19 reported that 75 percent of women 20 years of age or older are overweight or obese, which makes this sector of the population susceptible to suffering from a malignant tumor in the breasts, as Alejandro Zentella Dehesa, a researcher at the Institute has pointed out. of Biomedical Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

In addition, this doctor added that “in addition to other hereditary conditions, all metabolic disorders related to weight gain represent a risk factor for breast cancer, even before the age of 40.”
Three age groups in women were those that concentrated the highest number of deaths: the 65 years and over, with 3 thousand 8 cases (38%); from 55 to 6 years with 1,994 cases (25.2%) and from 45 to 54, with 1,816 cases (22.9%).
