From the goals and the greatest figures in the sport, to the mascots and advertising campaigns, most World Cups have memorable moments.
This year the event will be held at the World Cup in Qatar, which will take place on November 21 and will end on December 18.
This edition will be the last to feature 32 teams, and it will be the seventh consecutive participation of the Mexican team.
The World Cup is one of the most anticipated events not only for fans of this emblematic sport, but also for the entertainment industry; advertising campaigns take advantage of the occasion to reaffirm their name as a brand and spice up the event. This is talked about all year long, on a scale probably bigger than what is talked about during the Super Bowl or the Oscars.
The expectation to know the advertising campaigns that will give life to this new World Cup has not been long in coming and we are eager to know which ones will go down in history as some of the great promotions of the World Cups. For this reason, today I present to you the 5 most emblematic campaigns in the history of the World Cups.
5 World Cup advertising campaigns that will go down in history
Pepsi is probably Along with Coca-Cola, one of those who have marked the World Cup the most with excellent commercials. In each and every one that we will see in this top, we have found stars and legends of this sport. However, in few like this one, and probably Pepsi’s in South Africa, the culture of the host country is so highlighted. Therefore, this is the first, in Korea-Japan 2002.
One of the campaigns that turned to the world came in 2014 by Nike, which showed a group of friends/rivals playing a match on a local court. As they play, some of them become superstars of the sport, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Neymar Jr, Pirlo and Gonzalo Higuaín being some of those who appear. This campaign seeks to represent the dreams of young athletes, because while they are the ones who play to be referents, one day, they will be the ones who will be seen by their greatest idols.
South Africa 2010 was undoubtedly a watershed in the history of the World Cups, not only because it was the first time in history that a World Cup would be held on African soil, but also because it enjoyed an impressive number of excellent advertising campaigns. The perfect example could be Pepsi, where stars such as Messi, Kaká, Drogba, Henry and Lampard, who today are considered legends of this sport, participated in a “challenge” in La Savana.
Coca-Cola is undoubtedly a host whose name can never be erased from the history of the World Cups, because it always steals, on a greater or lesser scale, a certain protagonism. However, that “celebrations” commercial known as History of celebrations, accompanied by the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, has gone down in history for its happy tone and its message of brotherhood.
Adidas starred in one of the commercials that marked several generations. Robben, Kaká, Beckham and Zidane and some other famous soccer players star in another “street” confrontation where the children this time act as technical directors, in command of the best so far. At that time, the world did not know it, but the great absentees from this promo, Cristiano and Messi, would play their historic first World Cup.
