A few days ago, we had the great opportunity to visit the headquarters of Firaxis Games in Baltimore, Maryland, where of course, we spent a whole day playing their new project, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a title that will depart from many of the conventions that we can normally see within the games of the important comic brand. Our hours with this proposal were truly intense and highly satisfactory, so we have decided to present you very punctually, five specific elements that we loved so we think you should be pretty excited about this game.
Deep yet accessible gameplay
As you surely know, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is being developed by Firaxis Games, specifically by the team that gave us the fabulous XCOM 2 a few years ago. For this reason, its new proposal takes the path of tactical RPG, a genre that could be quite intimidating for some but in reality, in this specific title, it becomes extremely accessible even for the newest. This was achieved in different ways. On the one hand we have clear, clean and very easy to understand rules, and on the other, there is a very well elaborated tutorial that during the first hours of play, will take you by the hand explaining each of its parts in detail. In case you are a veteran of this type of game, you will be happy to know that although we are facing a game that anyone can take, in reality it is never a simpleton or anything like that.
Their characters
The Marvel universe is truly vast. Beyond all the characters that we have known in detail thanks to cinema and television, the reality is that there is still a lot of material to cut from if you turn to see things like comics. That was precisely what Firaxis did when bringing this project to life. Based on the famous saga of Rise of the Midnight Suns, the whole concept was born that Marvel’s Midnight Suns would be about this team of heroes and anti-heroes not so well known but very charming. Blade, Magik, Ghost Rider, Nico and more will join your cause along with 12 other characters of course, also including the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain America. It is important to mention that in the game we also meet The Hunter, a new hero that we can customize to our liking.
the supernatural
The style of Marvel’s Midnight Suns is not the work of chance, far from it. Since the planning of the game began, the development studio was very clear that it wanted to explore this much more mystical side of Marvel; that is to say, they wanted to get involved with this whole matter of magic, sorcery and demons that some of the brand’s comics have handled in such a good way. This matter is clearly seen from the moment you start playing this title, as you find out that the main villain is Lilith, mother of all demons who is putting even the most powerful heroes in the universe in check. To defeat her, our protagonists learn they must resort to unconventional methods filled with otherworldly affairs.
interactive scenarios
Returning a bit to the theme of the gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, I repeat that despite being a highly accessible game for anyone regardless of their experience with the genre, the title has different layers of depth that make it very fun to play. For example, we have its intricate level design. Each stage you visit to fight a battle against the forces of Lilith and Hydra will have different points with which you can interact. The new Firaxis game is one in which we must be as efficient as possible with our movements, as these are limited. One way to do it is by using the environment to our advantage, throwing enemies at explosives, using boxes to boost us and make a devastating attack or why not, take some rocks and use them as projectiles to finish off whoever is around us. In the end, the more creative you are, the better.
non-combat activities
Not everything in Marvel’s Midnight Suns is about taking out enemies. Between missions you can walk the corridors of the Abbey, as well as explore its nooks and crannies in search of new items and collectibles of all kinds. The headquarters of this team of heroes is an area where you can also live with its members to form better relationships that will later serve you in battle, as well as simply learn more about their past stories. Of course, there is also an area where you can upgrade your character’s abilities, modify their appearance, and generally make them battle-ready.
