Wonder Woman turns eighty years of adventures. From ancient gods to interstellar threats, Princess Diana of Themyscira has seen it all. But do you know everything about DC’s greatest warrior? Let’s take a moment to learn 5 fun facts you may not know about Wonder Woman.
Diana did not get her name from a goddess of Olympus, but from a human heroine
Hippolyta named her young daughter after Diana Rockwell Trevor, Steve’s mother. The Amazon learned the story directly from her namesake when her namesake found her in George Pérez’s Wonder Woman Issue 12, with a cover date of January 1988.
As a child growing up in Nebraska, Diana Rockwell wanted nothing more than to soar through the sky. She became a pilot in her teens, married, and had a son named Steve. She served as an aviator in World War II and later as a test pilot. A fateful experimental flight brought her to the hidden island of Themyscira.
There he discovered that the Amazons were being attacked by the many-armed demon Cottus. Without thinking, he launched into the fight and defeated the beast at the cost of his own life. He whispered her name to Hippolyta with his last breath. The queen named her daughter in honor of the fallen heroine.
Its accessories are forged with the armor of gods and heroes
You probably know that Diana won her armor and weapons in the tournament to choose the ambassador of the Amazons to the human world. But have you heard of the origin of those enchanted objects?
The goddess Hestia gave Wonder Woman the unbreakable Golden Lasso of Truth. It was forged by Hephaestus from the Belt of Gaia that belonged to Antiope, Hippolyta’s sister and Diana’s aunt. Antiope ruled as queen over another more bellicose faction of Amazons. She gave Hippolyta her Belt of Gaia before she met her death at the hands of Ariadne.
Wonder Woman’s sparkling silver bangles were also won in the contest. These priceless pieces were forged by Hephaestus from fragments of Zeus’s shield.
He has other super powers besides strength and flight.
You know she’s super strong and super fast, but what other abilities did the Olympian divine beings grant Diana? Wonder Woman can also communicate with any beast or creature thanks to Artemis’s blessing. His empathy with animals allows him to relate to creatures so much that he can calm them just by his presence. He often talks to them. From the smallest birds to the mighty dinosaurs, Diana loves all her life.
Sure you know Wonder Woman’s partner Cangura, but do you know her name?
The creatures of Themyscira have a special bond with Diana. One in particular has been his companion since some of his early adventures. Although all Amazons enjoy the company of kangaroos, Diana’s favorite is called Jumpa. On the island, it was common for the Amazons to saddle up and ride the kangas.
Superhero by day, fast food worker by night.
He has fought gods and monsters, but even superheroes need to pay the bills. Upon returning to Earth after six months in space, Diana discovered that Themyscira had disappeared during her absence. She was left for dead by the Justice League and she no longer had a home or income. Determined to support herself, she applied for a job at a fast food joint called Taco Whiz. She landed the job on 1993’s Wonder Woman issue # 73.
For months, Diana worked hard behind the counter. It was hard work, but she found feeding people rewarding and noble. He quickly connected with people from the restaurant and the neighborhood. Even his super-powered teammates and friends stopped by Taco Whiz for a snack.
Whether dressed in accessories shaped by the hands of the gods or in a bright blue fast food uniform, Wonder Woman is the stylish heroine we all aspire to be. Who knows what else we will learn about her in the next eighty years?
