45% of Mexicans with a formal job lack a salary that allows them to overcome povertythe equivalent to buy two basic baskets and meet the family welfare line, reported this Tuesday the association Citizen Action Against Poverty.
“It is common to think that formal employment guarantees overcoming poverty. However, it is necessary to demystify this erroneous perception”, commented Rogelio Gómez, coordinator of the organization, when presenting the report “Salaries under the magnifying glass”.

Gómez explained that an income less than the cost of two basic baskets is insufficient to overcome poverty, since the average size of households in Mexico is 3.6 people with 1.6 income recipients per household.
9.6 million Mexicans without getting out of poverty
Based on official data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), This is the situation of 45% of Mexicans with formal employmentequivalent to almost 9.6 million people.
Of these, 53% of formal workers are in medium and large companies, such as factories, warehouses, department stores, corporations or consortiums, according to the analysis.
Poverty and job insecurity, which is only associated with informality or underemployment, also invades the formal economy to a large extent,” the report added.
In addition, the organization pointed out that “insufficient wages” are palpable in almost the entire territory, but in particular in eight states.
In this sense, he explained that Sinaloa is the entity that has the greatest degree of affectation due to precarious salaries, reaching 62.6%.
This is followed by Guerrero, with 61.7%; Oaxaca, with 60.9%; Durango, with 58.5%; Chiapas, with 56.6%; Tlaxcala and Michoacán, with 56.2% each, and Nayarit, with 55.3%.
The principle is very clear: the salary must be enough to support the person who works and their family”, said Gómez.
He recalled that there is a proposal from business organizations for a “sufficient salary” of 8,600 pesos (464 dollars) per month and from there to advance to a “decent income” that can be more than 10,000 pesos (540 dollars) per month.
Based on figures from the IMSS, the average salary in Mexico reached 486.6 pesos per day (26 dollars) in 2022, that is, a salary of 14,598 pesos per month (789 dollars).
In this sense, Gómez explained that the IMSS average does not show the extremes because the median of the formal salary in Mexico, with IMSS figures, is 9,463 (about 511.5 dollars), which means that half of the people earn less than that amount.
According to the IMSS, in 2022, 752,748 formal jobs were created, with a total of 21.37 million workers.
