It is very important to know the tools that will help us increase children’s mental activity.
Functional memory refers to the manipulation of information that is stored in the short term (in the past, the term “functional memory” was used interchangeably with “short-term memory”). It is a skill that children use to learn and is needed to follow multi-step directions or solve a math problem mentally.
You can help your child improve executive function by incorporating techniques to reinforce functional memory into his daily life.
Books and stories
Reading, narrating and interpreting stories is a way for your child to learn to interpret images and focus better, as well as enriching his vocabulary. For the little ones we recommend sticky books.
Play cards
Simple card games like Crazy Eights, Uno, Go Fish, and War can improve working memory in two ways. Your child must remember the rules of the game and also the cards that he has and those that others have.
Music
This will help your child learn to recognize rhythms and work on his memory when learning songs.
Practice visualization
Encourage your child to create a picture in his mind of what he has just read or heard. For example, if he told you to set the table for five people, ask him to imagine what the table should look like. Then ask him to draw that picture. As his visualization skills improve, he can describe the image without drawing it.
