Despite complaints from part of the gaming community, A new survey has revealed that a third of gamers have expressed an interest in using cryptocurrencies in the Metaverse..
Also, more gamers believe the Metaverse will have a positive impact on gaming.
The survey was published Wednesday by institutional software developer Globant.. It was conducted by YouGov and surveyed 1,000 adult PC, console and/or mobile gamers last month, and 34% of respondents indicated an interest in transacting cryptocurrencies in the Metaverse.
The concept of “play to win” (P2E) in the Metaverse is also relatively well received by gamers.; 40% of respondents stated that they are “interested in a mix of the ‘play’ and ‘win’ aspects of the Metaverse.” Although 11% indicated that they are more interested in winning, and 49% stated that they are only interested in playing.
More than half (53%) of those surveyed also stated that they would be happy to work in virtual game worlds if they could earn digital currency from their work..
As for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), 16% of players stated that they had purchased at least one in the past. However, it was unclear if they were NFTs related to the game.
More than half (52%) of gamers believe that the Metaverse will change the video game industry and “a plurality of 41% think the Metaverse will have a positive impact on the industry (vs. 25% who disagree).”
However, despite 40% of respondents associating blockchain technology with the Metaverse, only one native blockchain platform made the list of the most recognizable brands in the Metaverse.
The most recognized is Meta, with 73%; followed by the creators of Fortnite, Epic Games, with 27%; Roblox, with 21%; The Sandbox, based on Ethereum, with 15%; and Pokemon Go developers Niantic with 10%.
Some die-hard gamers have expressed their distaste for cryptocurrencies and NFTs on numerous occasionsoften in response to big companies and brands announcing these integrations in their product lines.
They criticize the environmental impact of the technology and suggest that it negatively impacts the gaming experience, but the core reasoning seems to be the belief that companies are just looking to make a quick buck. in a similar vein to controversial microtransactions in games.
Recently, the video game developer Mark Venturelli criticized NFTs during the Brazil International Games Festival in a presentation entitled “Why NFTs are a nightmare”.
Venturelli argued that the introduction of speculative economic activity through NFTs will end up ruining the experience for people who just want to play for fun.as “organized groups” will take control as they work for profit at scale.
