A man who won $30.1 million in the chinese lottery went viral for telling a local newspaper that he would keep his award a secret from his son and wife so they wouldn’t “become lazy”.
As reported Business Insiderthe man, identified by the local newspaper Nanning Evening News like Mr. Li, he won 219.4 million yuan in the Guangxi Welfare Lottery on October 20.
“I haven’t told my wife or son,” Li told the publication, according to a translation from The South China Morning Post. “I am worried that they will feel superior to other people and will not work or study much in the future.”
Mr. Li bought 40 lottery tickets in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and found out the next day that he had won. The winner had been playing the lottery for 10 years.
“I consider buying the lottery as a hobby and my family doesn’t care,” Li told The Nanning Evening News.
The winner collected his prize on October 24 and did not leave the hotel that weekend for fear of losing his winning ticket.
Li received his check wearing a Fudou dungarees, the lottery mascot. The lucky man donated 5 million yuan (about 690 thousand dollars) to charity. After taxes, Mr. Li was left with $23.6 million.
