Concern around Covid-19 spikes around the world is growing. Even countries that had already achieved relative control of the situation have had to increase their protection measures. Only Israel, which is one of the most advanced nations in vaccination and had already eliminated the obligation to wear face masks in public spaces, has had to back down.
For its part, one of the factors that has led to the current scenario is the mutation suffered by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Especially the Delta Variant, formerly known as B.1.617.2 and discovered in India, is one of those responsible.
The most dangerous variant in the world
As a result of the investigations carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) the reclassified as “of interest”. In this denomination are all those that are more infectious or that cause more complications in patients. While a fundamental aspect is that in some cases they can even cause current vaccines to be less effective.
At the moment the only thing that has been proven is that this mutation is more infectious but it has not been verified that it is more deadly. While due to the changes observed, the symptoms are also different in infected people.
With the above in mind, WHO Director Tedros Adhanom revealed that this variant of Covid-19 has already spread to more than 100 countries. While the list of frequent symptoms that usually causes is the following.
- Runny nose
- Stomach ache.
- Sickness.
- Diarrhea.
- Loss of appetite
- Hearing loss.
- Gangrene.
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Joint pain
- Severe tonsillitis
- Swelling around the neck
In that sense, one of the most distinctive features is that patients with the Delta Variant no longer develop loss of smell, which is one of the general characteristics of Covid-19. On the other hand, due to the runny nose and the headache that occurs during the first days, some people are confused and think they have a general flu picture.
Precisely the above has caused many of the patients not to go immediately to a doctor but to opt for self-medication. This encourages the disease to progress in intensity and in the end the damage is greater.
Vaccines that do work against mutations
On the other hand, a recent study showed that Covid-19 vaccines developed by Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Covaxin they are highly effective in cases of the Delta Variant. While the rest of immunizations do suffer from a loss of efficacy.
While Mexico is not immune to this problem because so far at least 200 cases of this variant have already been detected. For this reason, the importance of accelerating the vaccination process before the spread of the mutation progresses has been pointed out.
