The Government of Mexico City announced this Wednesday the arrest of 10 people related to the attack against the popular journalist Ciro Gómez Leyvawho escaped unharmed last December from an armed attack.
The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed the information after a dozen searches by the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC) and the Prosecutor’s Office of the capital with the cooperation of the National Intelligence Center (CNI). .
“As part of the investigation of the attack against the journalist @CiroGomezL, at dawn today @SSC_CDMX and @FiscalíaCDMX, with the support of #CNI, carried out 12 simultaneous searches, there are 10 detainees,” the capital’s president reported on Twitter.
Although the official did not offer more details at the moment, the Secretary of Security, Omar Garcia Harfuchpromised to expand the information in a subsequent press conference.
Gómez Leyva, one of the most popular radio journalists in Mexico, denounced on December 16 that two people shot him with the “clear intent” to kill him.
“At 11:10 pm, 200 meters from my house, two people on a motorcycle shot at me, apparently with the clear intent to kill me. The armor of my truck that I was driving saved me and I have reported the matter to the authorities, ”the communicator then recounted on Twitter.
The attack has caused controversy in Mexico for being one of the most recognized communicators of the country and for his critical coverage of the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has promised that crime will not go unpunished despite ideological differences.
“I reiterate, there will be no impunity,” Sheinbaum, who belongs to López Obrador’s party, remarked this Wednesday.
The events occur while Mexico is consolidating itself as the most dangerous “country at peace” for the press, concentrating 20% of the murders of journalists in 2022, with 13, according to Reporters Without Borders.
While other associations such as the Inter-American Press Association (SIP) recorded close to 20 murders last year alone.
