Escape is a turn-based strategy RPG. You control a group of 12 children who manage a tank called Taranis, whom they meet by chance / fate while fleeing Berman’s army invasion. With Taranis, these children will wage an epic fight to rescue their parents, who are prisoners of war. And this will happen over the course of 12 chapters, a number that matches that of children for rather obscure reasons. And it is that one of the extreme measures is that you can sacrifice the life of a child to defeat one of the 12 bosses.
Each chapter has different moments that you find yourself while Taranis moves slowly from right to left. You’ll start a route, with sections indicating item pickup, health restoration boxes, and skill points (SP), and events like waypoints, battles (normal and elite), and ruins. Every now and then the route forks and lets you choose which way to go. The game will tell you which of the routes is the most dangerous, which will also be the one with the most rewards.
As for the diversity of activities, it is felt that each chapter has a bit of everything, and the truth is that you come to appreciate the pauses between fights a lot, this being what will be doing the most. At the intermediate points you have the possibility to manage everything related to your tank and its crew, with a limited number of actions. Between upgrade weapons, shields, satisfy your crew’s wishes and eat, actions will never be enough.
Fighting
Fugue’s combat is by turns, and with a well-accomplished proposal. Each enemy has a color code that is related to one of the three combat positions (with its three specific weapons) that our Tank has. The enemy’s turn can be delayed if you hit it with the correct weapon, which can be either a machine gun, a grenade launcher or a cannon. Each child in your group is linked to one of these types of weapons, which have their own traits and functions.
Machine guns are the weakest but most accurate and often have abilities that can pierce the enemy’s armor, cannons do more damage but have difficulty with accuracy, and grenade launchers fall somewhere in the middle. What’s more, each child offers different skills and options. When played well, each combat is a puzzle that challenges the player to use the skills, weapons, and needs of the characters (who can be injured in combat) in the most efficient way.
At the start of the game, the difficulty curve allows you to learn to manage its combat system, with all the playable options that Fuga offers you. You will learn new skills, you will be able to improve your tank. You will also be able to motivate the children enough to achieve better results in combat, or improve their relationships so that they carry out joint attacks that will do much more damage. All in all, you won’t have that much time to learn, and if things go wrong, the Soul Cannon is always available.
This is the kind of game that at the same time tells you a deep story, full of the horrors of war, and also offers you a challenge in the playable, giving you the opportunity to face your enemies to the last consequences. The Soul Cannon is just that last resort, with which a soul is used to make the most powerful shot. Very useful against the final bosses, but at a high cost, the life of one of your children.
Graphics and Sound
The artistic direction is without a doubt a strong one. Despite the fact that most of the time it is a fairly simple game, where you only move sideways between combat, the game is full of illustrations and moments full of beauty. The moments inside the tank between the intermediates you can control each of the anthropomorphic animal characters that have a very careful design, between tender and full of personality.

Also the inside of the tank has a great design. As for the enemies, perhaps a more detailed work could be done, without this they will disappoint you. And the bosses, at least they seemed pretty good to me. Regarding the sound design, Fuga’s music, voices, and sound effects are highly satisfying. I feel that this game manages to totally immerse you in its history, its characters and its world since it has a great artistic work.
Perhaps the least worked are the towns that you meet on the way every time you finish a chapter. In these places you will have the opportunity to have a few interactions with the NPCs to get objects and comic pages. And that’s it. Then you go on with your war to rescue the children’s parents.
Conclution
Escape is a game that has a lot to offer you if you like turn-based strategy video games. It’s fun, deep in history and mechanics, full of options. Although in the long run it can become repetitive and the chapters too long. All in all, I feel that it is a highly enjoyable game. Difficulty peaks found in the boss battles can be frustrating. So it seems that only the most difficult paths will help to improve your tank, get more resources and experience enough.

The combat is satisfying, the graphic style is attractive, the music will never disappoint. The history is one of its strong sides, with everything and the common places. If what you are looking for is a linear RPG that can be overcome in less than 20 hours, this may be a game that you should have on your radar. With the management and combat mechanics offered, you are sure to find a fun challenge to take on. And the soul cannon will become that obsession during the game that can take everything a different path.
