The National Commission for the Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) warned about a video circulating on social networks in which supposedly businessman Carlos Slim promotes an investment project that promises great profits, But it is a fraud made with artificial intelligence, since the voice and image of the Mexican businessman were manipulated.
“The video shows the image of Carlos Slim reporting on a new application created by the businessmanwhere it specifically asks Mexican citizens to redirect to a link, fill out a form, send it and subsequently, indicates that they will contact the person to earn up to $21 thousand pesos per day,” Condusef said in a statement.
However, the video that is being spread on social networks is false, since it has been identified that it has been manipulated with artificial intelligence, altering the voice and face of the businessman.
Condusef warned users not to be fooled by said video and recommended that they ensure that the entity in which they wish to invest is registered with the institution at this link: https://webapps.condusef.gob.mx/SIPRES/ jsp/pub/index.jsp.
The entity also recommended:
- Do not provide money before verifying that the financial institution or entity is registered and authorized.
- Do not give personal information or carry out operations through any social network, it is better to go in person to the corresponding financial institution.
- Never enter passwords, especially banking ones, on internet sites that came to you through social networks, email, chat, text messages or WhatsApp.
- Avoid providing financial information.
This is not the first time that fraud has been reported using the businessman’s voice and image to promote an investment. Last September, a video began to circulate on social media showing Arturo Elías Ayub talking about investments with his father-in-law, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. Although it might look authenticit is a fake video created with artificial intelligence, specifically with deepfake technology, as reported by the businessman.
The AI-manipulated clip was published on Facebook by the ‘Inversiones Petroleras’ page, which has 2,900 followers to date. In it, Elías Ayub supposedly asks Slim about the origin of his fortune and the owner of Telmex recommends investing in oil.
