To be a health professional requires many sacrifices, although in the end we cannot forget that these are people. Therefore, like everyone else, they can develop different diseases or illnesses at any time. That is why a study was carried out to find out the behavior of Mexican doctors when they become patients.
In it Medscape Report on Caring for Doctors as Patients: Mexico 2023which was carried out through an exclusive survey of 1,054 doctors (618 men and 425 women) from more than 40 specialties who practice or practiced as doctors in our country, the participants show part of how doctors experience their diseases.
When doctors are the patients in the office
84% of doctors believe that having been a patient influences the treatment of their patients. While 89% indicated that a personal illness or diagnosis has made them understand their patients better. The percentage rises to 93% and 95% among women and those under 45 years of age and general practitioners, respectively.
“Sometimes there is a belief that doctors tend to be cold in dealing with their patients. However, the results of this report show that this is not the case, being a patient significantly influences the treatment of your patients, as well as understanding them better,” highlighted Dr. Mariana López Mejía, senior editor of the Spanish edition of Medscape. .
In turn, 99% stated that being a doctor makes them more aware of the risks involved in taking certain medications, 74% ask more questions than the average patient about the medications they are prescribed or would be prescribed, and 93% are feel or would feel safe taking medications prescribed by other doctors.

When it comes to healthcare, 48% of doctors believe they receive better healthcare than the average non-physician patient. In turn, 69% of doctors believe that they “sometimes” reject certain treatment options more than the average patient. While the same percentage (69%) considers that they sometimes and frequently receive unusual treatment options, such as more expensive, novel, innovative interventions, etc., than the average patient.
Compared to the average patient, 53% of doctors reported receiving care faster. When it comes to treatment options, 31% of doctors believe they have been offered medical treatments that would not have been offered to the average patient. Of the different treatments, 64% believe that they have been offered more innovative medical methods, 42% non-standard pharmacological treatments and 9% experimental treatments.
