American Express continues to support communities through two support programs: Backing Historic Small Restaurants” in the United States and “Backing International Small Restaurants” in five international markets -London, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto and Mexico City-, which seek to support the growth of small restaurants through financing and other resources.
“Supporting small businesses is critical to American Express. These donation programs support relevant restaurants within our communities,” said Madge Thomas, Director of Corporate Sustainability and President of the American Express Foundation. “Both ‘Backing Small’ programs help preserve the legacy of these restaurants and celebrate the rich variety of cuisines they serve around the world”
Second edition of the program
For the second consecutive year, American Express launches the “Backing International Small Restaurants” program, an initiative that promotes independent and socially relevant restaurants in Mexico City, especially those belonging to underrepresented or economically vulnerable groups.
Each of the selected restaurants will receive the equivalent of 7,500 dollars in national currency for adaptations and renovations that they consider necessary for the benefit of the operation of their operations.
“After the first edition of Backing International Small Restaurants in 2022, and the great interest of small restaurants in Mexico to participate, this year we have decided to expand the program to choose twelve restaurants in the city, and thus support them in their growth and consolidation”, commented Jorge Guevara, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communication of American Express Mexico and Latin America.
“By launching the Backing International Small Restaurants program for the second year in a row, we recognize the vital role that small restaurants play in our communities,” said David Downey, Executive Director of the IDA Foundation.
“This program is a demonstration of our commitment to supporting these businesses and helping them thrive and succeed in the face of ongoing economic challenges around the world. It is an honor to carry out this innovative work with the generous support of American Express and the collaboration of the Placemaking Mexico Foundation.
David Downey, Executive Director of the IDA Foundation.
Strengthen local economies
“Supporting local and small-scale restaurants has a multiplier effect in the community. It strengthens the economy of the area by making more use of nearby resources, while fostering social cohesion by serving as meeting points for neighbors. In addition, they act as natural watchmen, contributing to increasing security and being recognized as active members of the community, says Guillermo Bernal, Executive Director of Fundación Placemaking México.
How to participate in the Backing International Small Restaurants program?
In collaboration with Fundación IDA and Placemaking México, a total of 90,000 dollars in national currency will be donated, among the 12 selected restaurants.
Participants can learn more about the requirements and apply for support at www.downtown.org/event/bisr from Wednesday, May 31 through Friday, July 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
