- The patient was a 14-year-old boy from Baja California Sur who was born with a urinary tract malformation disorder.
- World Transplant Patient Day is commemorated every June 6.
- Thanks to this successful intervention, ISSSTE reactivates its Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program.
Since its foundation in 1959 the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) has made important achievements and now adds a historic transplant. It was all thanks to the solidarity of a mother but also to the tireless collaboration of a multidisciplinary medical team that participated in the intervention.
What is new is that for the first time in a decade, a group of specialists from the National Medical Center (CMN) “November 20” performed a successful pediatric kidney transplant. The beneficiary was a 14-year-old beneficiary boy, from Baja California Sur, to whom her mother, in an act of love, donated her kidney to save his life.
ISSSTE makes history with a transplant
under the World Day of Transplant Patients, the organization’s general director, Pedro Zenteno Santaella, congratulated the high-level medical team that changed the adolescent’s life for their outstanding work. It began with the leader of the operation, the pediatric surgeon, an expert in liver and kidney transplants, Gerardo Ávila Vargas, as well as the intensive care, anesthesiology and pediatric nephrology teams.
The director of the hospital Martha Alvarado Ibarraspecified that this is the first pediatric kidney transplant to be carried out in 10 years.
“This was achieved thanks to the commitment of all the professionals of this CMN ’20 de Noviembre’, and the result is that we found this child in perfect condition and the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program was reactivated throughout the country.”
The pediatric nephrologist, Veronica Amaro Triana, revealed the evolution of the child. He indicated that in the first 24 hours after surgery, she practically reported a recovery of 50 percent of her kidney function, which is very favorable. He also explained that the minor never went through dialysis or hemodialysis and this shows that a direct kidney transplant was achieved.
“This procedure radically changes the expectations of the young person. He will be integrated to do everything that is expected of a healthy child, he will have a freer diet that will allow him to complete the development expected for his age, gain weight and stability in many aspects; Your quality of life will improve dramatically.
Congenital malformation disorder of urinary tract
He reported that the child was born with a urinary tract malformation disorder, which was surgically corrected between the ages of 6 and 10. However, this led to a process of end-stage chronic renal failure, for which he was a candidate for a transplant. Fortunately, his mother decided to donate a kidney to him and she was a match, which now opens a new opportunity for him.
It is with great enthusiasm that we present the success story of Carlos Omar, a pediatric kidney transplant patient at the @cmn20november that will improve your quality of life.

Regarding the successful operation, the head of the Transplant Service of the CMN “20 de Noviembre”, Gerardo Alejandro Navarro Toledo, explained that he had very good vascular control.
“Once we identified and had the vessels well dissected, we went to the adjoining operating room for the kidney donated by the mother. We review and value it; Since both the artery and the vein were in good condition, we removed the excess fat and implanted it. Fortunately, the graft responded excellently in the child, with very good uresis from the beginning”.
