Rome and Mexico City will be connected, starting in June, by a daily flight that will increase the exchange of travelers between two of the most important tourist powers in the world, a milestone that the Mexican Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, celebrated this Tuesday in the Italian capital.
We went from four weekly flights to a daily flight. And from that the tourist currents will continue to increase. In 2019, before the pandemic, we received 164,000 Italian tourists and we hope to exceed 200,000 before the end of the year,” Torruco explained to EFE.
According to the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), Italy will confirm itself as one of the three main issuers of tourists to Mexicoan achievement that confirms the growing interest of Europeans in the Latin American country.
The capital, Mexico City, is becoming the point of arrival for a traveler who, above all, is looking for art and gastronomy, but who is also beginning to leave the city for other environments.
We have observed that the new tourist likes nature, looks for remote places and is also going to enjoy Mexican cuisine, one of the first to be declared an intangible heritage of humanity,” Torruco said at the end of a press conference to explain his visit to Italy.

The new route between the capitals of both countries will be operated by Aeroméxicowhich replaces the connection that Alitalia managed until its dissolution in 2021, which left without a regular direct route and made it necessary to book charter flights or stopovers.
Last March, the Mexican airline began operating four weekly flights between Rome and CDMXwhich from June will have daily frequency.
We predict all the success because the planes go 100% and whenever there is this type of connectivity it is for the benefit of both parties”, highlighted the head of the Sectur, after stating that “with Italy we share a lot, flag colors and space as tourist power”.
Mexico, among the nations most liked by tourists
In 2022, Mexico ranked sixth in the top 10 of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)only below France, Spain, the United States, Turkey and Italy.
In addition, it reached the ninth position in foreign currency income from international visitors, that is, the money that each traveler spends at their destination and which is the priority of the tourism policy implemented by the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The economic benefit left by international visitors during 2022 was 28,016 million dollars41.7% more than what was registered in 2021 and, according to Torruco, in 2023 they expect to exceed 31,000 million.
There is a lot of interest in tourism products such as the Mayan Train, which we have detailed to Italian tour operators in various meetings,” said Torruco, who will meet with his Italian counterpart before traveling to Milan (north).
Foreign direct investment in tourism, for its part, broke the historical record with 3,447 million dollars in 2022, 216% more than the values registered before the pandemic.
For this reason, the Mexican ambassador to Italy, Carlos García de Alba, described Torruco’s visit as “timely, important and strategic” because Italy and Mexico are “tourist powers.”
