The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has announced the reorganization of the National Superintendence of Cryptoactives (Sunacrip)according to a decree issued on March 17.
A new board of directors will direct the reorganization, led by Anabel Pereira Fernández, lawyer who served as president of the Deposit Guarantee and Bank Protection Fund (FOGADE), the Venezuelan version of the United States Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). Other directors include Héctor Andrés Obregón Pérez, Luis Alberto Pérez González and Julio César Mora Sánchez.

The new board structure leaves out Joselit Ramírez, who has led the department since its creation in 2018. Ramírez would have been arrested on March 17 on corruption charges, according to local media in Venezuela. Ramirez oversaw the country’s cryptocurrency Petro and crypto tax rules.
In June 2020, the United States included Ramírez on its most wanted list. The Homeland Security Investigations branch of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a reward of up to $5 million for any information leading to the capture of the Petro’s supervisor..
At that time, the authorities alleged that Ramírez had “deep political, social and economic ties” with alleged drug lordsamong them Tareck El Aissami, former vice president of Venezuela.
