The DC universe is about to change forever. After months of speculation and rumors, James Gunn finally presented his plans (and those of Peter Safran) to organize the new cinematographic future of the heroes of said publishing house. This ends a period of disconnection, misunderstood films, controversy and strong criticism of the films produced. The universe developed by Zack Snyder is a thing of the past, and although some fans of the director may not get over it, the future will change. James Gunn knows that he faces a tough uphill road, especially because of the fame of the so-called Snyderverse, but what do you think of the work done by the filmmaker?
During the panel in which he announced the future projects of DC Studios, James Gunn offered a brief – and very honest – opinion on the problems that Warner Bros. has faced in recent years. The results were not what was expected, and therefore, it was necessary to change the vision that governed DC’s heroes. These were his words (via ScreenRant).
“I wanted to take care of these characters. We all know it’s been a rocky road for many of them, especially in recent years. And I really thought it was a challenge, but I think it’s a chance to create something really wonderful with those characters. history has been a [email protected]! It’s been a really fucked up ride for DC. I think basically there was no one who cared about the meta, and they were giving property to whatever creative put a smile on whoever was in charge. There was never any real power given to the people in charge, so someone could always go over their head and do whatever they wanted.”
Specifically, the also director of The Suicide Squad mentioned certain films that had no connection within the universe that Warner executives raised. Although the Snyderverse (made up of Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Y Zack Snyder’s Justice League) had a clear objective, all the films around him sought to distance themselves from Snyder’s aesthetics and vision. The reason? Critics and spectators were divided before the filmmaker’s projects. Consequently, the movies of the then called DCEU did not have a defined tone or a clear point to reach.
“We had the DCEU, which later became Joss Whedon’s Justice League. But it also turned into the Snyderverse, which turned into this. And then we have Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, which doesn’t even match what happened in Wonder Woman. We also have the Arrowverse and we even got in with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, and you know what that is exactly? Suddenly, Bat-Mite is a real guy. So how can we take these things together, make them make sense, unify them and make it a real universe, a real world?” he added.
Whether or not they are fans of the Snyderverse, James Gunn’s opinion is very close to the general consensus. The DCEU began with two films full of intensity (the man of steel, batman vs superman), but his latest installments have been a romantic drama (Wonder Woman 1984) and an action comedy (The Suicide Squad). No matter how well or badly they have been received, there was little union between what they sought to tell.
Do you agree with the words of James Gunn? Do you think that your long-term plans give the expected result?
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
