According to Statista, In 2019, a total of 4,366 deaths from brain cancer were registered in the world.
Specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Chiapas surgically removed a tumor that was located in the brain that put the life of a 47-year-old man at risk.
The man identified as Martín “N” was working in the city of Tapachula, where suddenly, when he was going to a work meeting, he began to feel bad and convulsed, losing consciousness, for which his relatives took him to the emergency service of the Zone General Hospital (HGZ) No. 1 “Nueva Frontera” to be treated immediately.
“In the morning my nephews took me to the office. I told them three times: I feel bad, and the third time, I began to have seizures. I felt like my life was leaving me. I woke up in the ‘Nueva Frontera’ hospital, there they treated me wonderfully and they diagnosed me with a tumor in the parietal region; I had never had symptoms or felt bad before,” said Martín, according to the IMSS statement.
The head of the IMSS Medical Services Headquarters in Chiapas, Roberto Sánchez Moscoso, narrated that the man’s surgery lasted just over eight hours, where medical personnel specialized in Neurosurgery successfully performed resection of a meningioma that was lodged in the right parietal region.
He explained that it was a complex procedure due to the anatomical location of the tumor; however, thanks to timely care, early diagnosis, and the experience of medical personnel, today the patient is completely asymptomatic, with no visible sequelae; He still has a few months to go before he can retire, while he continues to work.
After five months in recovery, the man returned to his work area in the Subdelegation Warehouse, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, thanks to the staff of the IMSS Chiapas. In addition, during a supervision visit by the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo Aburto, he approached the owner and thanked him for his attention.
What are the types of primary brain tumors?
According to the Mayo Clinic, There are many different types of primary brain tumors. Each is named after the type of cells affected. Examples include:
These tumors begin in the brain or spinal cord and include astrocytomas, ependymomas, glioblastomas, oligoastrocytomas, and oligodendrogliomas.
A meningioma is a tumor that arises from the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges). Most meningiomas are not cancerous.
These are benign tumors that develop on the nerves that control balance and hearing from the inner ear to the brain.
These are mainly tumors that manifest in the pituitary gland, at the base of the brain. These tumors can affect pituitary hormones and have effects throughout the body.
These cancerous brain tumors are more common in children, although they can appear at any age. A medulloblastoma begins in the lower back of the brain and tends to spread through the cerebrospinal fluid.
- Germ cell tumors
Germ cell tumors can develop during childhood, when the testicles and ovaries are forming. However, sometimes germ cell tumors affect other parts of the body, such as the brain.
These rare tumors start near the pituitary gland in the brain, which secretes hormones that control many bodily functions. As the craniopharyngioma grows slowly, it can affect the pituitary gland and other structures near the brain.
