On December 15 and 16, 2022, a University Web3 Hackathon powered by Gear was held in Mexico, where nearly 50 speakers and mentors participated. This was reported by its organizers to Cointelegraph en Español.
The event brought together developers, influencers, university professors, Web3 professionals, and members of the Gear team to share their knowledge and experience. “Gear trusts that events like this are essential to attract the next generation of developers to the Web3 ecosystem and plans to continue hosting such events in the future”, they reported in the statement.
More than 500 participants had access to workshops, exhibitions by educators and presentations by professional figures from the crypto industry in Mexico. Also there was a total of $12,000 in prizes for the winners.
The hackathon winners were the following teams:
- ITAM with “Decentralized Diary”
- Tec de Monterrey with “Vote Chain”
- UACAM with “SmartCube”
- IPN – ESCOM with “Decentralized Internet”
- UP with “NFT ticket”
The hackathon too had a special activity in which guest artists painted pictures dedicated to different types of feelings, such as love, trust, freedom, wisdom and cats, “everyone loves cats”, they highlighted in the statement.
These paintings have become the first in a collection of Vara non-fungible tokens (NFTs) created using a unique smart contract, based on Gear Protocol technology.. The contract includes information about the geolocation where it was drawn, the name of the artist, his social network link and the most interesting thing: in 6 months it will automatically provide the next location for new artists who wish to contribute to the collection.
“These artists will need to create a painting in the same theme as the previous artist, ensuring that the collection will eventually become a beautiful art gallery showcasing talent from around the world.”, highlighted the organizers.
The collection “NFT feelings on Vara” is a dynamic and evolving work of art, with each new artist adding their own contributions unique to the final result. The details of each piece, including the number of paintings, the style, the name of the artist and the place of creation, are determined randomly on the blockchain of “rod testnet”. The smart contract would ensure that each addition to the collection is unique and would add an element of unpredictability to the final artwork.
The first auction was held at Gear’s Christmas party, with NFTs of talented independent artists from Mexico. It was held on December 17 at the “Bitcoin Embassy Bar”, in Mexico City and it was a great success, since all the paintings were sold. Additionally, all of the revenue generated from the sale of the NFTs went directly to the artists, with buyers getting not only the NFT, but also the actual painting done by the artists during the hackathon.

Gear’s Head of Ecosystem, Pavel Salas, commented: “Gear was honored to be able to facilitate and participate in this amazing event, which brought together universities, Web3 industry projects, students and many more to learn and collaborate. With an impressive lineup of speakers, workshops, networking opportunities, side events and auctions, it was an unforgettable experience for all who attended. The hackathon provided a unique opportunity for attendees to connect with professionals in the field and learn about the latest technologies and trends in the Web3 industry. And it was just the beginning, we hope to do the next one in 6 months with even more students from more universities added, and a greater number of projects with which they can collaborate”.
Gear has not only focused on technological development, but has also placed great emphasis on providing education on blockchain technology, Web3 development and naturally smart contract platform. Online workshops were also held, there was participation in numerous hackathons and they made presentations of their platform at Web3 congresses.
