This is an issue that has been on the table for years by the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends not consuming more than 2 grams of sodium per day, which represents 5 grams per day, which could prevent 2.5 million deaths around the world.
Profeco alerts harmful indexes of Takis and Totis
Sodium is one of the common ingredients in fried foods and one of the reasons why health experts and international organizations carry out annual campaigns to reduce the sale and consumption of these among the population.
However, Profeco points out that, although it is not requested to eliminate these types of products from the market, the ideal is to consume them in low quantities to avoid serious health consequences.
“The main cause of deaths from disease are the so-called ‘non-communicable diseases’, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and cerebrovascular accidents; high sodium intake has been associated with several of these diseases“, specifies the Consumer Magazine in its July 2021 issue.
Although sodium is found in multiple food products, such as hot sauces, microwave popcorn, flour tortillas, mayonnaise, canned and packaged, among many more; According to Profeco, of 80 products analyzed for its publication in July last year, 17 different types of food already reported excess sodium in their structure.
For this reason, this time one of the most sought-after sectors during high season, holidays and celebrations was targeted: snacks.
Among all the edibles analyzed in the Profeco laboratory, at least 10 that alerted to a sodium problem were snacks and the three with the most salt present were Totis Donitas, with 1 thousand 345 milligrams (mg) of sodium per 100 grams (g) of product; What Totis, with 1 thousand 181 mg of sodium per 100 g of snacks; and the Takis, with 908 mg of sodium per 100 g of fried food.
