This week millions of people showed off their costumes for Halloween and Day of the Dead, but some people faced, like every year, the controversy. One of them was Jerry Jones, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Cowboyswho could be penalized for his suit.
Jones attended a Halloween party dressed as a blind NFL referee, with dark glasses, a striped shirt and a cane for the visually impaired. Her niece took a social media picture of her and it went viral in a matter of minutes.
The costume joke clearly went against NFL officials, who are often criticized by fans, players and team owners for their decisions on the field. However, the NFL has clear rules about mocking referees.
“Comments related to the quality of umpiring, individual calls or missed calls, the league umpiring department, an umpiring team, or an individual game official that accuses game officials of acting with bias or in any way questioning the integrity of NFL game officials; or post negative comments or derogatory/demeaning content related to refereeing on social media,” a 2019 league memo reads.
Dallas Cowboys owner knew he was close to the fine
Jerry Jones seemed well aware of what his costume entailed. when the magazine Sports Illustrated asked if he was making fun of the referees, Jones said:
“I’m being very careful because I’m getting very close to a fine,” he said. “Dressing like them shows how much I love them… how much I respect their decision-making. I had the cane and everything. And I also used it on some people.”
So far the NFL has not publicly commented on the costume.
