Until a few days ago, the premiere of Hurray Mexico!the new movie Luis Estrada (hello), was agreed in some movie theaters for this November 3, while Netflix would arrive on the 16th of this month. Today, the plans have changed dramatically. The film, which seeks to be a political satire of what is currently happening in the country, has been left without a release date.
Since Netflix took over the rights to the project, it was agreed that the film would have a premiere in select cinemas, even when the platform was reluctant. Filming went smoothly between the filmmakers and the film giant. streaming; however, around the release date, everything changed. Many viewers began to ask if Hurray Mexico! It would really reach theaters, since the billboards of the main chains in the country did not show it. The answer, through social networks of the movie, was blunt: No.
Hurray Mexico! It can no longer be seen in theaters in Mexico or on Netflix, at least not for the moment. And it is that as it happened with BARD, False Chronicle of a Few Truths, director Luis Estrada wants to make sure his work hits the big screen across the country, not just in a handful of theaters, as was the original plan. When he tried to change the distribution terms with platform executives and they refused, Estrada made a strong decision. Buy the rights to the movie from him to have exclusive control of its release.
“As they say in Mexico: what is even is not chipotudo. I am a cinema dinosaur who still thinks that his films have to be seen collectively: in a dark room with a big screen and people eating popcorn. I am trying to defend my dignity because I believe in cinema. I bought those rights from them to have them exclusively and not lose control of the film”, mentioned the director for THE COUNTRY.
Netflix confirmed the news, assuring that their interest in working with the Mexican filmmaker remains intact, but that they did not agree with his most recent conditions. For this reason, the mutual decision was made to break relations, at least momentarily.
“We are excited to work with maestro Luis Estrada on his new film. However, in recent weeks the director and producer has expressed his interest in implementing a different distribution strategy than the one agreed upon. We want to honor that vision, which is why we have agreed to revert the rights to the film to him,” Netflix said in a statement.
It is worth mentioning that, despite its release on the main networks in the country, Netflix did not report box office numbers for BARD, False Chronicle of a Few Truths. For this reason, it is almost impossible to determine how many people are actually willing to see a film in theaters even when it will reach streaming in a very few weeks. As an example, the perfect dictatorship, the previous film by Luis Estrada, was a success at the box office. Their $189.1 million pesos they made it the highest-grossing Mexican film of 2014. It is possible that their decision is an attempt to repeat such a feat, although considering the post-pandemic situation of Mexican cinema, it sounds quite complicated.
So far, there is no other release date for Hurray Mexico! Its director will begin looking for distributors who will bet on his three-hour satire and give it a massive release in theaters in Mexico. Later, he will come, now yes, to the Netflix catalog. How long will it take to see it?
John Joseph Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the cinema up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movies.
