Although this seems like good news, for the moment thousands of migrants have been stranded in the southern United States and in Tijuana, Mexico.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that he would seek to redouble efforts to address migrant policies.
The “Stay in Mexico” program was finally eliminated after a three-month attempt by President Joe Biden.
With the intention of redoubling efforts to resolve the migration crisis, the SRE dismissed the “Stay in Mexico” program, the program that was dedicated to retaining migrants on the border with the United States.
The Government of the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) decided to put an end to this program after the latest figures presented where it was indicated that 5,700 people received asylum, and not the 70,000 as estimated after the impact of migration processes during the presidency of donald trump.
This rupture has been interpreted in two ways, because at the same time that this will be resolved with the 24,000 work visas promised by President Joe Biden, meanwhile these people, thousands of Venezuelans and Central and South American migrants remain stranded. in the southern United States and on the Mexican border.
SRE says goodbye to the “Stay in Mexico” program to retain migrants
After the complaints that have been presented by organizations such as the National Human Rights Commission of Mexicoafter showing the precarious and unhealthy conditions in which migrants were forced to live until their legal process in the United States was resolved, which has sometimes lasted for years, it was decided to take this action.
A few months ago, the United States Department of Homeland Security indicated that as of August 8 it would be the “beginning of the end” for this program, legally known as Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP)this by order of the President Joe Biden. The background recalls when the president, at the beginning of his process, sought to eliminate this initiative without luck.
Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico issued a statement at a crucial moment to implement policies between the two North American countries, with the aim of curbing and legalizing the crossing of migrants. In fact, both Presidents recently had a conversation in which they concluded that they will implement measures ahead of the North American Summit.
Today, President AMLO was questioned about the transformation of the Consulates in Mexico and about the work that the Government of Mexico will play in the face of this migration process, highlighting the help given to migrants from Venezuela:
“We must take care that the Migrant Defense Attorney’s Office, even if it is in the Consulate, or that the Consulate is in fact a Migrant Defense Attorney’s Office, complies with foreign policy regulations so as not to intervene in United States affairs. That part be taken care of so that they are not going to use that as a pretext, as an excuse against the Government of Mexico, which is using the Consulates for political purposes.”
Finally, the Mexican president assured that it will be necessary to take into consideration what has been done in coordination with the pertinent organizations with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard on the Commission for the Attention of Migrants.
