Mexico expects 51 cold fronts to enter the country in the 2022-2023 seasonwhich begins in September and ends in May, according to the forecasts of the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
In addition, the SMN indicated that in December 2022 and January 2023 the largest number of frontal systems of the season will be recorded.
Through a press conference, the coordinator of the SMN, Alejandra Mendez Gironannounced that for September 2022 “the entry of two cold fronts is forecast, for October 5, for November 6 and for December 8”.
For the month of January 2023, “The arrival of nine frontal systems is estimated, in February and March seven, in each month, in April six and in May one”.
In the past winter season, 48 cold fronts were registered and, for the 2022-2023 season, the arrival of 51 frontal systems is forecast; cold fronts and cold air masses cause a drop in temperature and frost,” explained Méndez Girón.
The head of the SMN explained that, “climatologically, the states with the greatest decreases in temperature are chihuahua, Mexico City, Durango, Mexico state, Puebla, Tlaxcala Y Zacatecas“.
While for the center of the country, minimum temperatures are expected to range between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
Where do cold fronts come from?
He recalled that, during this period, “cold air masses from Canada and the United States move to Mexico and cause a drop in temperature and frost in the north and center of the country”, while on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico they cause intense winds from the north and high waves, which is known as north (ice winds).

He explained that, when the air masses advance to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, “they generate a very strong north wind, which even exceeds 100 kilometers per hour (km/h), a situation that can extend to the Gulf of Tehuantepec, where it causes high waves”, while in the Yucatan Peninsula temperatures decrease.
The SMN coordinator stressed that, as is done during the rainy season and tropical cyclones, close collaboration is maintained with the National Civil Protection Coordination and the National Defense and Navy secretariats during the winter system season.
As well as municipal, state and federal authorities, so that the established protocols to protect the population and their heritage are implemented in a timely manner.
Tropical depressions and hurricanes
On the other hand, Méndez Girón reported that Tropical Depression Fifteen E was formed this Wednesday, a phenomenon that at 4:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. GMT) was located 235 kilometers south-southwest of Manzanillo, Colima.
The system for now registers maximum winds of 55 km/h, gusts of 75 km/h and is moving west at 17 km/h.
The cloud bands of this system will cause very heavy rains (from 50 to 75 millimeters (mm)) in places in Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán and Nayarit, as well as winds with gusts of 60 km/h and waves of 1 to 2 meters (m) high on the coasts of the mentioned states”, he pointed out.
Last weekend, tropical storm Madeline formed, arriving immediately after storm Lester, which left damage in dozens of municipalities in the state of Guerrero, southern Mexico.
It also occurs after the Agatha, Blas, Celia, Bonnie, Darby, Estelle, Frank, Georgette, Howard, Ivette, Javier and Kay phenomena, which reached a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Mexican authorities reported last May that they expect the formation of up to forty named cyclones by 2022which they described as an “active season”, and predicted that of the total number of tropical cyclones generated, both in the Atlantic and in the Pacific, at least five will impact the country.
