This week, many users of Instagram (including various influencersWhat Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner) wanted the popular social network for the car. Following the changes and updates you announced Goal (so much for Facebook as for Ig), the intention of wanting to look more and more like TikTok was more than clear. Users do not like this idea at all, something they made very clear in a campaign.
Goal announced that Instagram will have functions increasingly focused on reels, quite leaving aside the photos. The social network began to experiment with a new interface of the feedwhich shows us the content in full screen, like TikTok. Some users who have already tried these changes criticized the update, since the full screen does not allow them to see the content, the description of the publication or the comments.
However, this not all. Instagram will also automatically convert any video under 15 minutes into a reel. In this way, it would be easier for the social network to recommend it and get more people to see it by the publication algorithm.
This adds to another change that also drew criticism. A new scrolling mode based on algorithms that would prioritize content that users might want to see, even if it’s from someone you don’t follow. These posts could take precedence over status updates from your friends or users you care about.
While you can find the posts of people you follow in a separate tab, many users of Instagram they are not at all happy with these updates. The photographer and content creator Tati Bruening (@Illumitati) is one of them and launched a campaign to prevent the social network from continuing to look like TikTok: “Make Instagram Instagram Again”.
In addition to this publication (which accumulates more than two million likes), illuminati also made a petition (which already has more than two hundred thousand signatures) to ask Instagram that recovers the chronological order of the publications and “an algorithm that favors photos”.
This campaign surely became much more viral when the well-known kim kardashianwho has more than 326 million followers on IgY Kylie Jennerwith more than 361 million, joined and shared the publication in their stories.
Given the repercussion that the publication had, Adam Mosseri (head of the social network) did not take long to publish a video, where he tries to explain the changes that took place in Instagram. At the beginning of the message, Mosseri clarified that very few users experienced the changes to the design of the application and that those changes are still in the testing phase.
As for the photos, the head of the social network assured that we will continue to see them, since they are part of the “inheritance” of the application. However, he also added: “I have to be honest. I believe that Instagram it’s going to be converted more and more to video over time.”
In the presentation of the quarterly results of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg also spoke on the subject of algorithmic recommendations in Instagram: “Social feeds are moving from being primarily driven by the people and accounts you follow to being increasingly driven by AI recommending content you’ll find interesting from all over Facebook and Instagrameven if you don’t follow those creators.”
