Earlier this year, the renowned social network, tiktok, announced that it was working on a feature that would allow restricting the content that appeared on the feed of its teenage users. In this way, it proposed to improve the interaction of the youngest with the social network. Now, after a couple of months, the company has finally confirmed that they have found a way to restrict content.
According to the official statement of tiktok, the function is called Content Levels and would be coming to the social network in the coming weeks. The company explained that Content Levels works with the same rating system as movies and video games. This is to be able to filter out videos with more mature themes and will apply to videos that don’t break the rules of TikTokbut which may be inappropriate for younger users of the social network.
When a video inappropriate for teens among 13 Y 17 years appears in his feedinstead of appearing the typical content warning banner, the application will not directly show the video because it contains “mature or complex issues”. In the blog post of TikTokthe company explains that “Each video is assigned a maturity score to prevent minors 18 years see him during the experience of TikTok“.
Something that the company did not clarify is how this maturity score will be determined or what criteria is used to classify the videos. In any case, the social network clarified that the function is in its “earliest version” and that they plan to expand a bit on what can be done with the feature. An example would be adding the ability for users to choose what content they feel comfortable with, something the company wants to add at some point.
Until the function appears on all devices, it is a bit lacking, but there is an element that we will be able to use in the coming weeks to select what we want to see or not in our feed. The function will arrive with an update and will let us select which words or hashtags we do not want to appear in our feed.
TikTok is always in constant work so that its users have a very bearable user experience. After many complained that the videos that appeared to them were repetitive, TikTok got the algorithm of the social network to show its users more diverse content. This feature was only tested on USAbut the company said it will reach other countries after the success it had in that country.
