Today [13 de junio] took the pledge ceremony at the University of Bristol, his version of the Hippocratic Oathofficially ending his time as a medical student.
Now he hopes to become a pediatrician so he can help poor children like himself.
For more than a year, Oscar endured chemotherapy and underwent surgery
All of Oscar’s earliest memories are of the Great Ormond Street Hospital, the famous London children’s hospital that became his second home when receiving treatment there.
In 2001, four-year-old Oscar woke up to find a hard lump in her abdomen. Within 24 hours he had received the agonizing diagnosis of stage 3 liver cancer.
For more than a year, Oscar endured chemotherapy and underwent surgery.
“I want to pay tribute to my parents,” he said. “It is difficult as a family to be told that your child has a serious illness.
“My mother was pregnant at the time with my sister, both parents worked full time, taking care of me and my brother who was three years old at the time; however, I cannot imagine the hell they went through.”
“Cancer does not affect the patient, it affects the whole family.”
He was withdrawn from elementary school to concentrate on treating
Oscar was too young to understand much of what was going on, even though he knew his life was very different from others his age.
He was withdrawn from primary school to focus on treatment and would remain in follow-up care for some time. But as the weekly appointments become monthly and monthly become annual, he was able to have a normal high school education.
Now free to pursue himself and out of canceroscar he dedicated his school years to a single goal: to become a doctor so he can help people like him and give back to the NHS that saved his life.
He worked hard to get a place in medical school, becoming an outstanding studentwinning multiple awards and accolades, taking on leadership and responsibility roles in their school and even finding time to volunteer and raise money for charity.
“As I got older and came to terms with what happened, I had a real drive to get a place in medical school, so I could go back and help other sick kids.
“I really respected the doctors and nurses, they were brilliant.”
In 2016, earned a place at Bristol Medical Schoolpart of the University of Bristol, a time he “loved”.
In medical school, Oscar continued his academic work along with other accomplishments, including launching an award-winning international teaching series (endorsed by the Medical Defense Union) and the founding of a national network of student-run medical societies, supported by the Association of Breast Surgeons.
At his University of Bristol pledge ceremony today, committed to practicing his profession to the best of his ability; maintain the utmost respect for human life and work for the good of all.
Oscar believes his experience will help him be a better doctor.
“Once you’ve faced a serious illness like cancer, you have a level of true empathy. You better understand what your patients are going through.
“I hope it will help me in my work with patients. As a doctor, it is one thing to assess what your patient is going through, and another to have been through it yourself.”
Oscar’s first job will be in Essexwith one of his rotations working in pediatrics.
“Getting the job was an amazing moment for me,” Oscar said. “I am enormously excited to become a doctor and work as a pediatrician.
“I just want sick children to know that they can lead full lives beyond cancer and that they can achieve their dreams. I have achieved my dreams and so can they.
