Lamborghini Squadra Corse has confirmed that it will develop its LMDh prototype with the aim of competing in the premier class of the WEC and IMSA from 2024. The manufacturer did not give more information about its proposal, postponing the announcement of the chassis supplier, the official drivers involved in the project or the team that can give Sports program support. A couple of days later, some of these spots start to clear up.although there are still many issues to be resolved.
Giorgio Sanna, head of Lamborghini Squadra Corse, has pointed out that the first objective of the project involves have an equal number of LMDh prototypes in the WEC hypercar class and in the IMS GTP categoryA. In practical terms, Lamborghini will compete with two LMDhs in the WEC and IMSA or will compete with a single prototype in each championship. One of the points that can make a difference is find a first level partner that serves as support for the two branches of this project.

To have two LMDh prototypes per championship, Lamborghini Squadra Corse needs a reliable team that can take on such a logistical and technical challenge. For this reason, Lamborghini wants its first year in the queen class of resistance, read 2024, to be from the base offered by a single team. In other words, a single structure must manage the Lamborghini LMDh prototypes in the WEC and IMSA. Of course, the manufacturer handles several options, although none of them have been made public.
“We will communicate something at the end of the season regarding the team. Now it is too early to think about this and the drivers. The goal is to have a single team that manages the WEC and IMSA program. That is why it is too early to talk about a team, since in addition an LMDh program is not as simple to manage as a GT3 project. The effort to support more than one client is something that we will implement step by step. In principle, we will only start with one team” has explained Giorgio Sanna.
What is clear from Sanna’s statements is that Lamborghini will not enter the WEC hypercar class and IMSA GTP category with an official factory team, betting on providing support to a ‘team-client’ that already exists in its agenda. In fact, Lamborghini will not pay the team that operates the project as a contracted partner, but will provide support at different levels as already done in a similar way. to TR3 Racing projects in the IMSA GTD Pro class or Grasser Racing Team in the DTM.
