Peugeot has made the risky decision to reduce the 208 range by eliminating versions that are very important for the commercial future of a general utility that deals in the B segment. The Peugeot 208 says goodbye to various trim levels and engines. We review how the mechanical offer and prices are after these changes.
peugeot, like other car brands, must face the “perfect storm” that is hitting the European automotive industry. One of the main problems that the French firm must deal with is neither more nor less than the global shortage of microchips. Some components strictly necessary for the manufacture of automobiles. That is why real juggling is being done to use the stock of microchips in the most efficient way possible.
This situation, facing the user, translates into a notable reduction in the offer. And it is that the brands are giving priority to certain models that leave a greater profit margin and, depending on the model, to specific versions. The peugeot 208
has had to adapt to the times. The result? Its range has been reduced worryingly.
The range of the Peugeot 208 is reduced by eliminating the basic versions
What changes has Peugeot made in the 208 range? The French manufacturer has put the most basic versions of its utility in its sights. The Access and Like trim levels have disappeared of the configurator. In addition, and in case the elimination of these finishes that are decisive from the commercial point of view, the Style finish has also been withdrawn.
The decision to withdraw these finishes from the offer is not something minor, since this has a direct impact on the starting price of the 208. A price that has become more expensive. Now, according to configuration, the French utility starts from €19,040. These are the versions that are available: turn on, ActivePack, Allure, Allure Pack, GT Y GT Pack.
The Active finish, the new access version, has a solvent endowment. Among the standard equipment are elements such as Bluetooth, USB connection, DAB digital radio, LED daytime running lights, electrically adjustable and heated exterior rear-view mirrors, automatic lighting, multiple airbags (front, side and curtain), air conditioning, central locking with remote control, height-adjustable front seats and multimedia system with Mirror Screen function (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).
The engines of the Peugeot 208 and its 100% electric variant
Regarding the mechanical section there are also news. Peugeot has also made adjustments in order to reduce the number of available engines. Those interested in buying the 208 have a choice of petrol and diesel engines available, as well as a fully electric variant. In gasoline we have a 1.2-litre PureTech engine with 100 hp which can be associated with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission. A step above is a 130 hp 1.2 PureTech engine Available exclusively with the aforementioned automatic gearbox.
Drivers who do many kilometers a year and look for a diesel mechanic only have a single engine at their disposal. Is a 100 hp 1.5-litre BlueHDi engine
combined with a six-speed manual transmission. All engines have a front-wheel drive configuration.
