If PlayStation is known for anything beyond the console itself, it is for creating great exclusive games, generally narrative and big budget blockbuster, like The Last of Us, God of War, Horion Forbidden West or Ghost of Tsushima. But how much does it cost to make these types of games? The Japanese company has revealed the amount of money you have invested in the creation of new video games.
“We plan to increase software development expenses aimed at strengthen proprietary software in our existing studios by approximately 40 billion yen ($308 million),” PlayStation said in its latest financial report (via IGN). That is, just over 300 million dollars destined to create new first party games.
The most curious thing is that PS5 may not be the only platform that new PlayStation games arrive on, the company speaks of “multiple platforms” in your plans. “Going forward, our goal is to grow the gaming business by strengthening our proprietary software and deploying that software across multiple platforms,” the company said.
Presumably the other platform PlayStation is talking about is PC, where it has already published games like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. The next PlayStation game to reach compatible will be Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collectionwhich would arrive in June on PC.
PlayStation bets on the PC
After many years of working exclusively for his own console, PlayStation has finally opened up to PC with its own publishing brand and is looking for staff to continue expanding in this field. So far, your games published on PC are at least 2 or 3 years old, will it be time to that PlayStation publish its games simultaneously on console and PC? Strategy that Microsoft currently follows and has been harshly criticized for stopping having “exclusives” on its Xbox consoles.
