Cultural appropriation has been a bad practice that Zara has been constantly accused of on social media.
The impact that Zara has had on the market has grown more and more and the controversy has accompanied the store in each of its movements.
In the new complaint made against Zara on social networks, turning on the cultural appropriation alert, we can see garments with embroidery alluding to the work carried out by various Mexican artisans and artisans.
Zara is today one of the most powerful brands in the world and the volume of business forces it to acquire all kinds of resources in design, such as those that have earned it accusations of cultural appropriation and in a new complaint through social networks, the brand is exposed selling “Mexican” garments, which once again turns on the alerts of this bad practice.
With this in mind An interesting exercise is evident and it is the one that has to do with the way in which brands are increasingly involved in practices that, far from recognizing design, have left terrible references of how ideas that do not belong to them are used. and that have unleashed highly reprehensible trends in networks.
At a cost of one thousand 299 pesos, Carla Escoffie posted on your account Twitter a couple of images where he made irony with the declaration of Zara about not doing cultural appropriation.
The brand sells in tests published by Escoffié, at least three garments. Two blouses and a green dress with handmade motifs such as embroidery characteristic of the crafts that are worked on garments.
Zara’s occurrence with this new round of garments shows the ability of this store to continue selling clothes inspired by crafts, as well as the success of these products, hence the brand insists on their preparation.
These practices have left retail very badly off and the important thing is that they reveal the limits to which brands are willing to go, thereby establishing challenges that are not wasted and if they are cases that we cannot lose sight of, especially when it comes to actions that are paid with the reputation of these stores.
Paying for idea theft with reputation
Intellectual property theft occurs at all levels. From a brand that discovers that its proposal for a painting course ended up being stolen by the exhibition before which it pitched, to stores like Zara that demonstrate the challenge that exists in the market, when they continue to challenge the responsible consumer, with bad practices of cultural appropriation.
The case of Monet MX led to social networks to the famous exhibition, when the artist, who had the idea of pitching a painting course that he could offer in these facilities, discovered that everything he had exhibited was stolen to launch own course.
Designs that end badly
Designs are tremendously important today, because they define the communication with which brands interact with consumers, due to this it is tremendously important to follow the principles that are being defined to improve practices in this regard.
An exemplary case of how creators’ intellectual property is sought to be protected has occurred in Mexico with the Ministry of Culture, which has become a kind of mediating body between creators affected by the theft of their designs and the brands involved, being Zara one of these firms mentioned by the Secretariat.
All this series of cases are references to which we have to pay attention and thereby discover what culture is defined in the market and how to take advantage of the resources at hand when you are an affected creator.
