Twitter has revealed that its own tools were used to carry out the massive hack registered on July 16.
The social network experienced what could be its biggest security breach in its history, as various official accounts of figures from politics, technology and entertainment were compromised.
Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Kanye West, Apple, Uber and other profiles were compromised. Cyber attackers took advantage of these accounts to defraud followers, asking them to donate bitcoins to “double them” in the face of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the fact that those affected quickly realized the event that violated their cybersecurity, many users fell into the trap and donated their money to the account that the hackers placed as a destination.
Twitter’s stance on mass hacking
The social network issued a position on this computer attack and indicated that it would be investigating the incident.
“We are aware of a security incident that has affected Twitter accounts. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone soon, “said Twitter.
After that, Twitter began to freeze verified accounts, making it impossible to use them “in order to protect users from spam and any other malicious activity. “
After a few hours of the massive hacking on Twitter, the social network revealed that cyber attackers may have used their own tools.
“We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal tools and systems,” said Twitter.
This means that the hackers may have had contact with some of the Twitter employees to take control of the affected accounts.
However, Twitter has not specified how the mass attack was carried out but has indicated that it is still investigating the situation.
