A job offer on the official ZeniMax Jobs page seems to indicate that the developer ID Software is working on another installment of DOOM. The DOOM series dates back to the early 1990s, launching in 1993, just a year after id introduced the world to the granddaddy of first-person shooters, Wolfenstein. DOOM took a long hiatus after the release of DOOM 64 in 1997, then returned in the early 1980s with a third numbered installment.
After DOOM 3 hit stores in 2003, the brand received expansions, spinoffs, and remasters that kept things afloat but ultimately slowed progress in some ways. Of course, that all changed with the arrival of DOOM (2016), a seminal release for id Software that gave the classic series a modern facelift, but remained true to its old-school nature. The studio raised the bar again by releasing DOOM Eternal in early 2020, which moved the needle in its own right, especially in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay. And while id bolstered the 2020 release with subsequent DOOM Eternal expansions and Horde Mode, franchise loyalists are still as eager as ever to see what the development team has in store for the iconic Space Marine.
Twitter user XboxWorlds recently discovered a listing on ZeniMax Jobs that suggests a new DOOM installment could be in development. The ad in question reveals that id Software is looking for a combat designer for a “future AAA first-person shooter title.” In particular, the qualifications section of the job posting asks applicants to possess a thorough understanding of id Software’s most recent efforts, specifically DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. Naturally, fans have begun to wonder if this means the studio plans to develop a third installment for the rebooted franchise.
Of course, this could culminate in any number of things. Some may remember that a Quake reboot was rumored in its day, although later Quake Remastered for consoles and PC was the protagonist. Id Software is also home to other iconic first-person shooter properties that could use a new life, like Rage, which originally launched in 2012 and received an oft-forgotten sequel in the first half of 2019.
As noted above, the latest DOOM entry, DOOM Eternal, hit stores just under two years ago to widespread acclaim. Since then, Id has released two expansions for the title – The Ancient Gods parts one and two – as well as several free updates, a couple of which included current-gen improvements and a Horde Mode. At the time of this writing, there is no official word on whether there is a sequel to DOOM Eternal.
