World of Warcraft states that there will not be another expansion focused on the Faction War, what will happen to the direction of the game?
Almost twenty years after the release of World of Warcraft, the well-known role-playing game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, recently announced that it will allow Alliance and Horde players to play together. In an interview, World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas explained how the game would be constituted after making this decision, and, on the other hand, has confirmed that it has no plans to do another expansion focused on the Alliance-Horde conflict.
In the latest World of Warcraft patch 9.2.5, after releasing the long-awaited Eternity’s End update, Alliance and Horde players will have the opportunity to complete dungeons, raids, and PvP togetherregardless of faction allegiance.
While World of Warcraft may eventually include more cross-faction content, as well as other important aspects of the game after the patch, it plans to do so in strict order primarily so as not to collapse under its own structure. According to Hazzikostas, the content of an infinite world between factions would represent a great challenge due to the popularity that this game has been acquiring, which means that it is unlikely to happen, although factional guilds may be available in the future.
In regards to all this speculation about WoW updates, Ion emphasized that he knows “it’s best not to close any doors.” In this way, he ensures that he does not want any details to be left out of the upcoming decisions, and, on the contrary, hopes that some community will be created through the cross-faction content that is being added. Therefore, it is unlikely that the history of World of Warcraft will return to focus on faction warfarejust as it did in Battle for Azeroth, and while factional play won’t be addressed in the next expansion, the existing agreement between the Alliance and the Horde will likely persist, and could even be strengthened.
As with Shadowlands, the Battle for Azeroth expansion initially sold well, but quickly fell out of favor with many World of Warcraft fans. While the world building and storylines were interesting at first, the focus on faction warfare felt forced after Legion, sabotaging the integrity of dozens of characters along the way. In fact, Battle for Azeroth proved that World of Warcraft fans were tired of faction warfare and would be glad to see the end of it.
Everything that has happened around the famous role-playing game has led to a fairly positive reception of World of Warcraft’s decision to allow factional play, although at the moment it is certainly limited. The players, almost unanimously, agree to leave the war behind, not to focus on old conflicts, and instead seek to venture from new possibilities. It is also in the interest of fans being able to play with their friends regardless of the faction or race they have chosen. In this sense, many of them hope that these changes will lead to a WoW community in which half of the player base is not incited to antagonize the remaining half.
But on the other hand, a minority of gamers are still totally against the company going for faction play, and even the possibility of them deciding more aspects of World of Warcraft. This is because faction warfare is considered by some to have been the essence of Warcraft, even though the Alliance and Horde have worked together to combat multiple common enemies since Warcraft 3. Some other fans hold a grudge against faction line players for various reasons, including toxic behavior or fueled hate for the conflict presenting in the game since its inception. Blizzard has stated that it wants to make faction play optional for precisely this reason, and looks forward to hearing feedback, wishes, and concerns from its players as they explore this new era of World of Warcraft.
So far, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available on PC and Eternity’s End is currently in development and testing.
