It is important to remember the important role of the pharmaceutical industry in the national economy, as it directly impacts 161 branches of economic activity, and contributes 1.4% of manufacturing to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 0.2% of national GDP. In the area of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), last year, when the pandemic began, this sector contributed 193.3 million dollars. In terms of employability, in 2020, the industry registers around 100,000 direct jobs and it is estimated that half a million indirect jobs are generated.
In this framework, last week, on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 September, the organization held its XXX National Convention of the National Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Canifarma), where authorities, academics and industrialists agreed on the urgent need to have with an atmosphere of trust that encourages dialogue with the representatives of the government of the 4T, and in this way, generate agreements for the benefit of the health and economy of the country’s inhabitants.
In this framework, Canifarma, which brings together 170 companies in the pharmaceutical sector, raised its voice to outline the points of a collaboration agenda between the public and private sectors, with the aim of promoting and strengthening the health system in the post-modern era. At the opening of the convention, Tatiana Clouthier, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) participated, who confirmed that “this administration has taken health as a preponderant point with a priority and strategic relevance, and of national security.”
For his part, Miguel Lombera, president of Canifarma, emphasized the importance of building bridges of dialogue and establishing an open and purposeful collaboration with the federal government, since this will generate better living conditions for everyone in Mexico.
In his opportunity, Francisco Cervantes, former president of the National Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamín), highlighted that the industry is experiencing one of the most important challenges of recent times: “To face and with common causes before an event that will mark the humanity forever, as is the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the most important health challenge in more than 100 years. Such is the impact that we must make a stop to propose a joint reflection among the industrialists ”.
Top-level personalities participated in the great annual event of the pharmaceutical industry, such as Dr. Julio Frenk Mora, former Secretary of Health and current rector of the University of Miami; Patrick Devlyn, president of the Health Commission of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE); Germán Fajardo Dolci, director of the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); and Dr. Hortensia Reyes Morales, director of the Health Systems Research Center of the National Institute of Public Health, among many others.
In the conclusions of the convention, it was made clear that in the coming months the bases of a new framework for conversation will be generated to present proposals and establish a permanent dialogue with the current government. Congratulations
