Your mental stability is not the only thing at risk.
The may work stress causes you more than fatigue: according to new research published in the journal Preventive Medicine , men under work stress may be more likely to develop certain types of cancer .
The scientists studied 3,103 men who had been diagnosed with cancer , and 512 healthy individuals as a control. They found that those who reported long-term exposure to work stress were more likely to be diagnosed with cancers of the lung, colon, rectum, and stomach, as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, than those without conditions of work stress .
It is important to highlight that these links were evident in men with prolonged exposure to occupational stress (between 15 and 30 years old). No relationship was found with the increased risk of cancer in individuals who worked in stressful settings for less than 15 years.
According to PsychCentral.com, in the study, the most stressful jobs included: firefighter, industrial engineer, aerospace engineer, mechanic, and railway vehicle and equipment repair worker. However, it is important to note that job stress came from a variety of sources, demonstrating that many types of jobs could be a risk. Participants mentioned high demand and time pressure, money problems, job insecurity and dangerous working conditions as sources of job stress .
However, researchers cannot be sure if job stress actually caused the cancer . Individuals who were diagnosed with cancer may have been more likely to report stressful working conditions after diagnosis.
